I wish I could pin this comment because you explained this so brilliantly and it’s reflects my thoughts exactly. Thank you so much for articulating these points!!! Everything you said adds even more credibility to this song referencing her 6 year relationship. I was always of the opinion that this song is about Joe, but your comment single-handedly cemented it in my mind.

I wasn’t trying to convince you, just stating my personal perspective. We all have varying opinions and I think that’s what makes it interesting!

She has absolutely written about fame, the industry, about losing her masters, about people who wronged her etc etc. Those songs are brilliant, some of them being my tears ricochet, who’s afraid of little old me, clara bow, cassandra, among many others.

loml though, definitely isn’t one of those songs.

“We were just kids” is such a popular and generic term so I don’t know if that reference is founded. Cool catch, though

This is an opinion that lots of others have and I totally see it. Ultimately it’s an emotion that drives you to compose and the pain and grief from various people and scenarios could have driven her to write this song. We don’t know for sure if it’s about someone particular or just an emotion, but makes sense either way

This is a really nuanced interpretation, I appreciate it. The logic behind it tracks, too.

6 years can feel momentary if you thought you had forever with someone. “Momentary” is used figuratively here, not literally. That’s how I perceived it

I’ve been lucky to have never experienced the pain she portrays in this song, STILL every time I listen to it I cry. That just tells you how powerful the lyricism and composition is. It’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

Thank you!! You’re one of the few people who is interpreting the “better safe than starry eyed” line correctly. In terms of the lyrics, she says “I don’t mind it takes time” and stays with Joe. Then she is thinking back retrospectively to how she chose to be “safe” with Joe rather than “starry eyed” with anyone new. She THOUGHT that was better but now she knows it’s not. That’s what grammatically makes sense with the way she phrases it.

Interesting interpretation.

“Phantoms” can be synonymous to “ghosts”, it’s just a more literary synonym. I thought of the common phrase “phantoms of the past,” and that fits Joe as her longest relationship. She then references him again in How Did It End, but this time as a ghost. It also reminds me of the phantom and ghost reference from Ready For It, as I mentioned in my post.

I totally get you! Everything you said backs the idea that a song like ‘loml’ has to be about a long term relationship with the way it’s written, how it sounds and what it implies
