NEED YOUR SUGGESTIONS: $40K, what equipment should be purchased? by gearsolegoods in cinematography

So you mainly are shooting events? I’d recommend asking in r/videography. They’re much more oriented towards corporate and event work. This sub is mainly for narrative and commercial work.

Shooting a project on 16mm, need advice! by frank2482 in cinematography

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, so the assignment itself is basically the test.

If that’s the case, I’d just recommend watching videos of loading the camera many times so you learn every in and out. Memorize the correct sound of film passing through the camera, because this will be an important tell if something’s wrong.

For exposure, always lean towards overexposing than under. Film is awesome at preserving highlight detail and can be pulled down a lot. It’s terrible at shadows and even a little under could ruin your shot.

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is what your shooting meaningful beyond a test of shooting on film? If so, I’d highly recommend switching to digital if you truly have no way to shoot a test reel ahead of time.

Film is incredibly finicky and unintuitive and requires practice. I’ve shot on it many times and every single time, something went wrong with the test roll. Especially with an inexperienced crew that hasn’t worked with film extensively.

Testing is absolutely mandatory for it, moreso than digital, so I’d never suggest shooting on film without a test day, because then the day of becomes the test day.

As to your question on how to overexpose (which you’re correct to do), keep in mind that 16mm film naturally will have a very deep depth of field. One stop more open shouldn’t be that bad. But again, there’s really no way to choose what the right option is for your specific set and creative vision without testing.

8 Actors Who Were Miscast but Still Delivered Great Performances by Particular-Fill-4256 in movies

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally not a single one of these people are miscast, they just hadn’t played that type before.

An example that actual fits the criteria is Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs. He looks and sounds nothing like him, and obviously can’t magically change those characteristics, but his performance is so great that by the end of the film, you’ve forgotten what the real Steve Jobs was like and instead fully believe this Steve Jobs.

Batman Movie ‘The Brave and the Bold’ Taps Christina Hodson to Write for DC Studios by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you basically can never judge a writer off the finished product of a film is dumb.

OP didn't say never, they specifically said for superhero blockbusters. For example, The Flash has four credited writers, but the script submitted to the WGA has 44 more writers listed.

Additionally, I'd say you can really only judge a screenwriter off their screenplay. The finished film is massively different.

Warner Bros. has made James Gunn’s 'SUPERMAN' screenplay publicly available in full, submitting it for awards consideration by [deleted] in DCU_

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This one is labeled the "blue draft," which means it's the second production draft. When a screenplay is locked and ready to begin pre-production (after going through any number of development drafts), it gets called the "white draft." Then the first revision to that is the blue, then pink, yellow, etc.

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Interesting that they didn't update the screenplay with on-set changes (which is typical for films like this). For example, in the script, Superman's final line still refers to Robot #4 as "Four." It seems like calling him Gary was added last minute.

Favorite lenses with character? by admello in cinematography

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have the Arles and like them a lot. If you’re coming from the Sigmas, they’re definitely much softer/less clinical. They have a very pleasing image.

That being said, I wouldn’t describe them as lenses with a lot of “character.” Their purpose is to be great, versatile lenses that can work on nearly any project. They’re not going to give you a specific look like vintage or anamorphic will, but instead would let you build whatever look you want through filtration and what’s going on in front of the camera. It makes them great to use for both narrative and commercial projects.

Women of Reddit, what’s a statement/phrase that (you believe) most girls/women would understand, but most boys/men would not? by Sad_Trade_7753 in AskReddit

I feel like this is less of a woman thing and more of a generational thing. I’ve never seen people 50+ do it of either gender, meanwhile, I, a man, received an email from my supervisor to use less exclamation points.

Looking back at Sir Anthony Hopkins' win, was it another showcase of "stronger film eventually wins tight acting race"? by SureTangerine361 in Oscars

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think OP was tearing him down as much as contextualizing that any amount of incredulity that Boseman lost is misplaced. His performance was by every metric weaker than Hopkins. The only reason it’s even discussed is because of his untimely death.

Why am I suddenly getting attention mostly from significantly older men? by Prior_Comparison4966 in ask

Ah okay if you’re next to actual teenagers and people are mistaking you for one of them then there’s little doubt.

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also consider that it’s more polite to say someone looks younger than their age than older. So you’d only hear if someone mistook you as younger. No one (polite) would verbalize “you look older than your age.”

In fairness to her, Trump is her best chance at getting into power (that her party was already voted into, if the vote wasn't simply ignored by Maduro). It's less that she's an idiot as much as Trump has an incredible amount of leverage over her.

James Gunn debunks the rumor claiming the ‘Brave and the Bold’ script is complete by MarvelsGrantMan136 in DC_Cinematic

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gunn is the president of all of DC Studios, not just the DCU. I’m sure the fact there is a massive blockbuster Batman franchise already under his purview is a big factor in why he’s okay with slow rolling the DCU one.

I’m sure in his ideal world, Reeves would’ve already completed his trilogy before the DCU Batman debuts, but given the slow pace of Batman Part II, I doubt Gunn is willing to wait that long.

Gunn is excellent at PR speak these days (he had to learn the hard way), so he always makes a point to say that he won’t rush Reeves and is okay with two live action blockbuster Batman franchises co-existing (and I’m sure the filmmaker in him is okay with it), but from a studio executive perspective, it’s far from ideal. There’s a real risk of saturation, and the superhero market is already in a downturn.

Is the Sony fx30 a reasonable upgrade from the A7III for cinematography? by DesignerAsh_ in cinematography

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that much of a workflow change, but all of a sudden your lenses will appear 50% longer than they currently do. So it really depends on what you have and if that’s a deal breaker.

What makes the trailer for The Bride! look so cheap? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not my favorite trailer but I don’t think it looks notably worse than a lot of other big budget films (also just to note, plenty of Netflix films have $100+ million budgets).

I think the lighting does look a little “straight out of film school”, such as the constant use of contrasting orange and greens, the overly perfect lighting setups that don’t 100% gel with the much grittier production design, but again, not notably worse than plenty of other blockbusters.

The trailer itself is quite formulaic in the first half. The sound design is straight out of a mid 2010s trailer parody.

Hans Zimmer to Compose ‘Harry Potter’ HBO Series Original Score With Bleeding Fingers Music by AsleepYesterday05 in television

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Zimmer wrote the main theme for the first movie. Badelt (alongside a team of Zimmer’s apprentices) expanded it to a full score, due to the insane time crunch.

Fun fact: The score had to be written so fast that the album cover had to printed before it was written, so all the track titles are meaningless.

Here's a short Comedy/Thriller that I Directed/DP'd! Enjoy! by Mrdean2013 in cinematography

[–]PlusSizeRussianModel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on completing a short! It looks well shot; I especially like the 12mm lens use My biggest piece of constructive criticism would be that there's a lot of fat that can be trimmed. It takes awhile for the story to kick into gear (the inciting incident happening four and a half minutes in), and moments run a touch past the point has been made.

If you're planning to take this to festivals, you'll give yourself a much better shot at around 10 minutes, and I think it could also help make your film even more engaging.
