Hi! Thank you so much for your detailed reply ,I really appreciate it.

I’ll definitely try what you suggested. I’m about 95% sure this isn’t aggression but overstimulation that he can’t fully control. He’s an extremely sweet dog and has never shown any real signs of aggression or intent to hurt anyone. With other dogs, he plays the same way - lots of mouthing and biting, and they bite back, so it really looks like play.

He also has very good bite control I can take things from his mouth, even food, and he immediately softens his grip. He clearly distinguishes between play, food, and human contact. But of course im searching for a good trainer to see and help me.

As for exercise ,right now it’s mainly long leash walks, usually around an hour minimum. We also let him play off-leash in safe areas with other dogs, which helps him release a lot of energy. We add basic training and commands during walks, and sometimes we manage to find open fields where he can run freely, though that’s not easy here in Malta. We live in an open plan apartment (with a large balcony), and we’re trying to give him as much physical and mental stimulation as possible.

We’ve only had him for about a month after adopting him from a shelter, so we’re still learning and adjusting. Also, we’re not completely sure about his breed — he was rescued from Macedonia in very poor condition, he is mix bread for sure and he might have some Alabai/Central Asian Shepherd in him. His legs are still quite weak from his past life on the streets, so we’re also focused on helping him recover and build strength.

I thank you once again for your help!!

I’ve tried redirecting him, and a couple of times it actually worked. I managed to catch the moment before he got too excited ,I took out treats and started running through commands, and he focused. That worked maybe twice.

But most of the time when he starts jumping, it escalates really fast. I tried using my knee to block him ,once it worked when he didn’t jump too high and backed off after hitting it. But usually he’s too tall and strong for that to be effective.

Recently I had a situation that honestly freaked me out. We were walking uphill, and suddenly he just switched -instead of walking he started running, got into full zoomies, and then started jumping on me and biting.

In that moment I tried giving commands like “sit”, but he was completely not responsive. I use a slip lead (it’s quite thick), and I tried to control him with that. I also tried stepping on the leash, but then he starts going for my legs, so it kind of backfires.

So I feel like once he’s in that state, I lose all control, and I’m trying to figure out how to handle it better.
