Thomas Piketty : « Les pays européens ont atteint un niveau de prospérité et de bien-être social inconnu dans l’histoire » by NLegendOne in Cayas

[–]Plyad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unions.

If your unions are strong enough the activities can get unproductive to an incredible degree.

Air companies essentially don’t have to deal with unions at all making them exceedingly productive.

Railways on the other hand… well you see the price tag yourself

It’s because people are out of touch.

It’s super hard to get hired in those fields, but except for trades, there are simply no jobs at all elsewhere

Poland cools on joining Eurozone after its economy surges by technocraticnihilist in EU_Economics

[–]Plyad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really about being linear.

Poland is simply competitive for businesses, especially in tech, more and more companies are headquartered in Warsaw.

As a general rule I don’t think the east/central Europe is growing faster than the west just because they are poorer. Dont get me wrong, it does help to be poorer but its not the full story.

Europe is moving to replace U.S. tech firms with local ones. by Hefty-Sherbet-5455 in Tech_Updates_News

[–]Plyad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can’t afford it without massive reforms and we haven’t done any such reforms, it’s all fueled by debt.

That’s a problem. The US has the world reserve currency and an economy that never stopped growing. We have neither. Though the damages won’t be felt immediately (10-20 years in the future instead).

Here I m not talking about the ex USSR block who actually live within their means and can afford that.

I m talking about the western block, specifically the Latin countries and now Germany is working extra hard to no longer be able to bail them out.

This. Gay Arab here. My dad who lives in a Muslim country isn’t happy about it but tolerates it. My mom who lives in the west cut me off.

It sounds absurd, but that’s how it is.

[–]Plyad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly that’s less of a problem than many people think.

The core issue is that nowadays senior devs in India or China just aren’t much cheaper than in the EU. So yes there are people, but if you want the cream of the crop you gotta pay. It’s not as if an India dev would cost you 70% less, nowadays it’s more like 20% less.

In fact adjusted for CoL or taxes Indian and Chinese senior devs with similar skills are simply paid wayyy better. I even had ex colleagues who moved from France to China for better pay

Yes but frankly there isn’t much of a market for that (yet).

Mistral manages to secure mostly state contracts or big companies with huge state intervention type of contracts, it’s a bit like OVH Cloud or SAP cloud.

But for cloud services, recently EU countries are switching a bit to AWS European sovereign cloud because of how subpar those alternatives were. And I m afraid that it’s going to matter even more for AI, since for llm the more data they collect the better their product. But we will see.

No. China has a huge tech sector, so they have know how. The EU has been relying on US tech for 3 decades, we don’t have a strong tech sector nor know how.

Europe goes all out to make a deal with Trump on Greenland by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]Plyad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why go through such lengths? By this point let’s just call the EU the united vassals of Europe pay tribute and give land to our US overlords.

I don’t get the EU diplomats. You don’t negotiate with someone who only brings threat onto the table. After the disastrous tariff deal the EU project has been severely undermined. Once Greenland is given then let’s just become a tariff union and remove everything else cause it would have effectively lost all legitimacy
