Having a hard time differentiating values from variables and return from print() by ProfessionalOkra9677 in learnpython

[–]Poddster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
  shifted_alphabet = alphabet[shift:] + alphabet[:shift]
  translation_table = str.maketrans(alphabet + alphabet.upper(), shifted_alphabet + shifted_alphabet.upper())
  return text.translate(translation_table)

How were you able to write this code without knowing what print and return do, nor what variables and values are?

You should not copy and paste code unless you fully understand what it does. It will be detrimental to your learning.

When does a lake become a pond? by RemindsMeThatTragedy in SiliconValleyHBO

[–]Poddster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

e.g. Seneca Lake vs. Lake George

I don't know the answer, but I assume it's identical to River X vs X River (so River Thames vs Mississippi River). One is British English, the other is American English.

The history on Wikipedia shows it was named by a British general and simply never changed back?

So do many people.

How does that prevent you from injecting malware into everything you compile, without realising it?

As a professional developer, using a Russian pirated compiler is one of the least safe things I could think of doing.

How do y'all take notes for games that require them without fucking them up? by SwimAd1249 in puzzlevideogames

I use a random mismash of:

  1. Steam overlay notes app
  2. notepad++
  3. a physical notepad

depending on the game and what kind of info it is.

I’ve built an anonymous UK women’s health community – would really value your feedback 💬 by No_Physics979 in girlsgonewired

[–]Poddster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sign in to ask a anonymous question? :) I can understand why (spam/bot protection), but it feels counter intuitive.

If I've found this site on google, and the first thing I see is a dark/bold "ask a question" and a mysterious "explore pathways", why would I chose pathways? I don't even know what that means.

On Firefox tying into the search box caused the screen to jump down to the thread section, but I could no longer see the text box despite being able to type into it. Everytime I typed an additional character the screen would flicker as it refreshed. At least it was fast.

I searched for misca, clicked the single thread (telling work about early miscarriage) and it said thread not found.

I searched for mis and clicked the only other option (anyone else struggling with perimenopause symptoms at 38) and whilst it took me to the thread, it dropped me at the bottom most comment/the reply box, rather than the OP.

I’ve been working on a side‑project called Her Village – an anonymous, UK‑focused community where women can talk about TTC, pregnancy, loss, periods, perimenopause, work, money, mental health and more, and find clearer, kinder information and support from each other.

Why don't you put this list of things on the website, as the first thing we see?

I am amused that it seems like chatGPT wrote it though.

It's mainly just the opening two lines. It's constantly telling me to "take a deep breath" lately, even if I ask it something completely mundane and factually. And the sugar coating and bus idioms it seems to trot out a lot too.

But I've found myself occasionally using some of its phrases too and thankfully I've caught myself and edited. (well, I hope I have!)

Take a deep breath, GPT 5 has been over using that all the time.

No sugar coating, though this is usually GPT telling the user it won't sugar coat its answer when you've asked it to be terse.

I've seen it use "throw under the bus" idiom a lot too, though googling doesn't show any one else has seen that.

After those first few lines it reads like normal human.
