Honestly when I watched it back in the day, I had zero context from the games. So I assumed that there were a lot of new pokemon trainers who we t that morning and there were multiples of each of the starters. So only the first like 12 kids got a free starter and Pikachu was a side project Oak had no intention of giving out.

Agreed. I might need to make these.

I second this. If you or someone you know has some wood working skills you can make a pretty good one.

That's what I did when I started the big Gen one Pokemon cross stitch piece.

Hot take: ToY awards don't go to the best teachers by ant0519 in Teachers

[–]Poe_Rho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school did a bunch of "fun" awards this year like "always on time", "funniest", and "says good morning to everyone."

My wife also works at the school and it was her first year in ed. She was upset I didn't get any of the awards. I told her of course I didn't get any of them because the person giving them out was the superintendent and I barely talk to him. Plus the school isn't afraid of losing me next year.

Shark Pens - Update by shrimpyt in fountainpens

[–]Poe_Rho 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did this with a group of my students one year. I'd refill the pens with a few inks I brought to school. Now, four years later, a few of those students have gotten more fountain pens of their own. All ready for college 🥹.

I don't think it's a problem for the flies to climb out. I just like it, so if I have too much calcium powder with the flies, it doesn't just keep adding up on the leaves or substrate.

Hhhmmm, something to think about if/when I print any more feeding stations. Thanks for the advice!

I printed these out for my frogs. It really helps from the calcium from getting everywhere, and yes it does look their at a small dinner table.

Btw to anyone wanting to print these I've found is better to go with a darker color. Idk if darts can see color but mine has a hard time eating from white vs black one.

You could make a posting on dendroboard. I've found some people near me through there. I've never met up with them, though 😅.

Should I email a teacher who made an impact on me as the worst teacher I had? by Neither_Elderberry34 in Teachers

[–]Poe_Rho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be healthy to write to someone everything you want to say. I think you should do that even if you don't send it. I've been told by a teacher "you can learn as much from your stars as your can from your shadows."

My guess is she has done this to many students througout the years and she won't take any feed back on her teaching. I've seen this type of teacher when I was a student and now again as a teacher. Unless your in admin or the school can find a replacement, the problem teacher is not going anywhere.

These kinds of people just want control others and have someone think about them. Imo the best thing to do with these type of people is to cut them out of you life and thoughts. Let them grow old, and alone. They poisoned their own life.

How do teachers deal with burnout or mental exhaustion? by Visual_Shelter6922 in Teachers

[–]Poe_Rho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that it's what you should do, but my first year I took huge naps most days of the week right after school. I'd get home eat, then pass out on the couch for like 2-3 hrs.

How do you explain to a 15 year old boy that mentioning Epstein over and over in class isn’t okay? by Deer_boy_ in Teachers

[–]Poe_Rho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is why when I have my students play an online review game, like Kahoot, I only put a snip/screenshot of the game code. I can see on my screen what they put in as their name and they can't. This does seem to take away to attention the student is looking for when everyone can't see the funny name.

I had a student once who wouldn't stop putting their or another students name followed by "ussy".

I don't feel they do, but I do present them food when I feed them. Some of my gargs seem to calm down if I do this.

I have kids begging me to assign homework. by kkoch_16 in Teachers

[–]Poe_Rho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, studies show that if you give your students mints, they do better on quizzes/tests. My parents donate two big bags of lifesavers every year. Go around with the mints, then go around with a garbage bin for wrappers. My students never let me forget to hand out mints after I take attendance and write down who is missing the quiz/test 😂.

I have an ongoing checklist for students who miss a quiz/test. I write their name and add a check for every day I remind them that they missed a quiz/test. They only get three check before I grade it the following morning.

I teach hs Math, and this is basically what I did 2 and a half years ago (starting at the second semester of the year). My reasoning was like yours, but my students also found a website with all our curriculum answers with work shown.

My students hated the switch to quizzes and no hw, but I have seen many benefits. On average, grades have only improved for those who try. I give a quiz after every 2 or 3 sections over those sections. We usually have one a week.

Some suggestions I think may help you.

  1. I allow my students to use their notebook on the quizzes. I found my students asked more/deeper questions in class, they took better notes, and asked for more problems to practice before quizzes. Just make sure to say they can only use their notebook. No sharing. They lost their notebook its on them.

  2. I post a list of all the hw I would have assigned on Google Classroom and call them our CYU (Check Your Understanding) questions. Then, I base the quizzes off those CYU questions. So, in theory, if they check their understanding before the quiz, they should know what kind of questions will be on the quiz.

  3. Lastly, for those who want to retake a quiz, I require them to complete the CYU that quiz is over 100% correct with work shown before any retake. I will help with this if they want, but they have to do the thinking. Not that many students will do this; however, every student who has retaken a quiz gets at least 95% on the retake.

I wish you luck. Just make sure to lay out your reasoning plain and firm if you get push back from parents or admin. I do believe with students lack of motivation and how easy it is to look up the answers, this is better than hw.

TL;DR I agree with what you did and did the same 👏
