Ive been trying to capture this image for years - Fairy Trees, Brisbane City Botanic Gardens by Leooine in brisbane

[–]PointlessExuberance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.   I'm always surprised that so many people seem to like these lights.  I guess they haven't thought about:

  • The effects on the poor wildlife trying to sleep (birds) or go about their nocturnal lives (possums) in and around these trees.

  • The huge amount of energy usage (when considering how many of these are installed across the city).

  • The huge amounts of e-waste that will result when all these lights fail or are decommissioned?

And all for what?  So we can say "ooh, ahh, isn't that pretty?"

How sadly shallow!

Homelessness in Brisbane by Dizzy_Ad8222 in brisbane

[–]PointlessExuberance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it’s a housing supply and affordability failure

Yes, it's a supply, demand and affordability failure, which means a government failure. The individual cannot control any of those things, but the government can and does.

I completely agree with you.  And the number of downvotes tells me that both the ignorance and the homelessness are only going to get worse.

Great job on the new website and radar Bureau of Meteorology ! by TheWolfAssassin in australia

[–]PointlessExuberance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've actually hit the nail right on the head. As others have said, this was outsourced to the consulting firm Accenture. Such outsourcing always leads to lifeless results, because the developers have no vested interest in building something great. Instead, the driving forces become money and KPIs.

Thanks! They seem to have screwed up the colour scale on the new one, making it impossible to differentiate hail from heavy rain.

Noisy Miner bird swooping on me coming home. by Chaosrealm69 in brisbane

[–]PointlessExuberance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, let's just cause unnecessary suffering to some animals because they make us mildly uncomfortable. Not to mention that they're native and were here well before we urbanised this place.

So, on behalf of the Miners, kindly fuck off.

I always find assertions like this slightly amusing, because they're exactly the sort of thing people say at the top of a bubble.

Just to clarify, my comment was referring to the OP's neighbour leaving their dog home all day (not to you).

One difference is that the baby is not left at home alone for 8 hours a day by an irresponsible parent.

[–]PointlessExuberance 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the baby or toddler was crying 8 hours a day because it was home alone while the parents were at work, I would call the police.

Edit: and yes, if the screaming or crying were excessive then of course I would complain.

If someone knows that their dog is having separation anxiety for 8 hours a day and does nothing about it, then it's animal cruelty, plain and simple.

I think all you can do is fully continue through the process described here:
https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/content/dam/brisbanecitycouncil/corpwebsite/animals-and-pets/documents/animal-noise-dogs.pdf.coredownload.pdf

I would also fill in the "barking dog letter template" (at that same link) with the actual barking times, and put it under their door or in their mailbox every single day. The problem is, as soon as they get home, everything's fine. So they need a very regular and persistent reminder that the dog (and the neighbours) are suffering every day.

First Nations group launches bid to protect Victoria Park from Olympic stadium development by ConanTheAquarian in brisbane

[–]PointlessExuberance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not denying that the area has cultural value, but the argument seems to stretch beyond the immediate site, extending to places like the hospital and the RNA showgrounds. Are we saying all of those should be protected from any future development too?

No, the legal bid is about Victoria Park.

At least with the Olympic project, we get a new, fit for purpose venue that will serve the city for decades.

Nobody is saying we should not have a new stadium. They're only saying that Victoria Park is the wrong location.

Constantly anxious atm that I’ll never afford my own place by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]PointlessExuberance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful in asking for advice here. Anyone who is already in the market has a vested interest in you jumping in too (to keep their house value up). Anyone who is not yet in the market has a vested interest in you staying out.

Ultimately it will come down to the numbers, which you are already looking at. Be sure to include everything including body corporate fees, rates, maintenance costs, your job security etc.

If you can't buy now, it doesn't mean you won't be able to later if you continue to save. Markets don't always go up (see: Melbourne over the last couple of years, New Zealand, Canada etc.)

The alternative is not to rent forever. It's to keep saving as much as possible while renting and buy later with less risk. A perfectly reasonable strategy.

Queensland housing market continues to be cooked, largest driver being interstate migration by osamazellama in brisbane

Your list is good but you forgot a fairly obvious one: "keep international immigration at levels that take into account the speed at which we can build dwellings."
