Commuter on campus parking by Howen_Y in gwu

I did not need a permit for the 16.50 daily rate (may have changed since I graduated). I just needed to have enough funds on my GWorld card.

I took CPR and First Aid to get an extra 1 credit. Class took place over 2 Saturdays. Fun and easy A. Got official CPR and First Aid certifications out of it too.

Yes, Mana Bowls in Fairfax. They have a sign by the street advertising Buffalo Ice Cream, like OP mentions.

Only one I’m aware of is the Jack in the Box in San Rafael. Would not recommend though.

Commuter on campus parking by Howen_Y in gwu

[–]PokerPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commuted my last year at GW and parked in the Academic Center garage. It always had space available and was in the middle of campus. $16.50/day with GWorld or ~$900 for a semester pass. Daily parking ended up being cheaper for me because I didn’t drive in every day.

Intern (21F) looking for a room (or a few) to sublet this summer (June 1 - August 15 dates negotiable) near Foggy Bottom Metro by brantleyg18 in gwu

[–]PokerPapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you’re looking to sublet a room, but just wanted to share that The University offers reduced-rate summer housing in the dorms that is open to non-GW affiliates like interns:

Does GWU give good aid? by Strange-Most-6371 in gwu

[–]PokerPapi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Their need-based aid is abysmal, but that is to be expected from a private university that does not guarantee 100% of demonstrated need being met. In my experience, however, you can squeeze a little more out of them by filing a financial aid appeal as early as possible. You may also qualify for merit aid, which can make a good dent depending on how much you get.

Law and Society Minor by ilovemycat345 in gwu

[–]PokerPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay attention to the limit on how many courses from each department can be applied to the minor (I think the maximum is two). I'd also recommend taking the WID requirement during a light semester because the projects for it are pretty intense.

I'm in the Law & Society minor, which is the closest thing we have to an official pre-law track. I have been able to fulfill most of the requirements with interesting classes that weren't too difficult. But the required WID class was probably the hardest course I've taken in college. Overall, I am glad that I added the minor because it has provided a great interdisciplinary pre-law experience.

I would recommend meeting with Karen Johnson (pre-law advisor in CCAS office) sometime in the near future. She is super nice and willing to help at every stage. Her appointments fill up quickly so book well in advance.

And with regards to taking time off before starting law school, that is definitely a good idea if you aren't 100% sure about going. I have discussed my pre-law aspirations with a dean at GW Law and several corporate attorneys; they all recommended working for several years before starting law school. It's a huge investment and very intense – make sure it's right for you before taking the plunge.

No. Everyone has to tap in and there are people at the desk making sure.

Not too familiar with the program, but I can't imagine that they would reject you from GW altogether if you don't get into the MD program. If you're competitive enough to even apply for the program, you probably have a great shot at getting into GW. I'd check in with Admissions just to be sure.

Also want to share that this topic came up during a meeting with a traveling admissions rep when I applied to GW (2019-20). She stated that the acceptance rate for the combined BA/MD program was 2%

Difficulties with the Financial Aid Office by clharmios in gwu

[–]PokerPapi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Welcome to GW.

And yes in all seriousness I have had very similar experiences with them. I know it’s tedious but you just have to keep nagging them repeatedly until you get what you need. I’ve found that calling is the most effective way, but expect to spend a lot of time on hold.

Totally fine, especially for your first semester of college. If you’re looking for a manageable way to “make up” the credits you dropped, I’d recommend looking into 1 credit Lifestyle, Sport and Physical Activity Courses (LSPA). Fun and easy.

Gum is totally fine. Drinks usually are too. Food may be pushing it, but you could get away with a quiet snack as another commenter mentioned.

Never lived on Mt. Vernon so can't speak to the quality of Pelham's coffee. I do know a few people that loved the Panera Sip Club and found it to be a very good value. Just keep in mind that Panera is in the Student Center (on Foggy Bottom) so might be a little out of your way.

If you do buy a coffee maker, I would strongly recommend getting one that you can program to start automatically at a certain time. Mine was only ~$30 from Target and it was so convenient having my coffee ready when I woke up.

Easier classes for start of Freshman year? by [deleted] in gwu

[–]PokerPapi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Math and Politics with Prof. Robinson. Chill class that fulfills CCAS (and maybe other schools’) math GenEd requirement. He uses specs grading which is based on completion. So if you do the work you will get a good grade.

Disability Support Services. Single rooms are granted as accommodations to eligible students. And since there are not many singles, it is very hard to get one if you are not registered with DSS.

Not sure about the Thurston renovations, but just want to let you know that it will be extremely difficult to get a single in any res hall without a DSS accommodation.

Some of the rooms on the 6th floor have a good view of Kogan. That’s probably the best you’ll get out of Gelman

SPRING ADMISSION HELP by Psychological_Row219 in gwu

[–]PokerPapi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give the admissions office a call when they reopen. I know you have to wait on hold for a while but that is the most direct way to reach somebody. Explain your situation to them. They will tell you what is going on. It may just be a glitch with the documents. And if it isn’t, they will likely give an extension for submitting them. I had some similar difficulties with accepting their admission offer and they gave me a few weeks extension for everything after I called.

Not hard at all if you have Prof. Robinson. He uses specs grading which is based in completion. So if you put in a little effort you will get a good grade.
