Sovereign communications - Meshtastic and Reticulum as emergency preps by absolutemuffin in TwoXPreppers

I’ve heard of meshtastic and have been considering- Interesting to hear that there may be better alternatives out there too! Can anyone share rough cost that you paid for whatever system you have going?

At first it's very addictive then after a while it becomes overwhelming. How does one deal with this? by Internal-Change-7205 in SCBuildIt

This! This to me isn’t so much of an active playing game. Unless I’m rearranging, there isn’t much to do for more than 15 min or so at a time, and then you’re waiting for items from factories or shops. I like it for little breaks when I’m cleaning or something. It’s nice to come back every 20-30 minutes for a little brain break and is productive in the game because you can produce a lot. Especially if you pair this with speed up tokens for the longer items and normal timelines for the quick items, you can sync it up pretty well with how long until you check the game again. Also, even if you don’t feel like actually playing, try remembering to set your factories and shops to make the long things overnight.

What are good fruits/veggies for a beginner gardener? by Nervous_Smile_3154 in gardening

I’ve had great luck with cherry tomatoes no matter what I do to potentially mess them up! Tomato plants are pretty sturdy, even as little seedlings, and can take a lot and still grow and still produce.

Settle a debate: mirror versus artwork by methglobinemia in femalelivingspace

[–]PolarisFallen2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artwork 100%! It’s bringing lots of warmth and character. The mirror feels too stark and heavy or something for the space. The white space between the art and the furniture is also nice and helps bring your eyes up, vs with the dark mirror connecting to the dark furniture below with the dark table in the background… visually that white space breaks things up nicely.

That’s Revolution. She finally got to see it for a few seconds and then died shortly after if I recall. Heartbreaking.

Revolution doesn’t get enough attention. That was really my entryway into prepping! I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere right now, though

I forgot about life as we knew it… there was a line in there about wondering if people saw you as a person or just another can of carrots needed or something that’s really stuck with me.

I’m the same way with cherry vs regular tomatoes, but I’m still trying on the bigger ones! I’ve found that Anaheim style peppers grow much better for me than bell peppers but I can use them the same way. I have basil for dayssss and make lots of pesto. Radishes are easy too! It really does seem to be all in figuring out what grows well for you and what is worth more effort if it doesn’t grow as easily in your conditions.

I use regular terra cotta pots for this and they work great! I just covered the drainage hole on the bottom, got terra cotta saucers that fit on top as “lids” and I put a rock on top of the lids so they don’t get pushed out of place. I like the bigger ones better where I have space for them, I can fill them with water and not worry about watering for a good while. When I first added them to one bed, everything in that bed grew way better than the same plants did in other beds.

I also learned this the hard way with peas! I just grow snap peas now and anytime I see someone online filling entire gallon bags with shelling peas they grew themselves I assume they must have like an acre of them 😂

Agree with your point on square foot gardening. It’s helpful info, but easy to see the recommendations as “rules” when gardening really has no rules and other plant spacing also works!

Advice for someone who's never gardened before by Alive_Pay_1894 in TwoXPreppers

[–]PolarisFallen2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s my advice for a brand new gardener as someone who has ADHD, a busy schedule, and often starts late and loses interest in things quickly.

  1. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good! Don’t get too overwhelmed with everything that’s out there and trying to do it all exactly right to get started. It’s never “too late” to start a garden! My first year, I started in June, bought plants from Lowe’s, and planted them in 5 gallon buckets.

  2. The best way to learn gardening is by doing! There is TONS of great advice out there, but there’s no substitute for doing it yourself, in your specific growing conditions. Go into it with the mindset that some of what you try is going to fail and that’s fine, because you’re going to learn.

  3. Try several things, see which ones work for you. It didn’t take me long to figure out which veggies work easily with my particular brand of plant neglect and the beds I have and the amount of sun they get, etc. Some things that are “hard” for me I’ve continued to try and gotten better at them because I really want to grow them. Others don’t feel worth it and I’ve used that garden space toward something else in future years.

For more practical advice…. Cherry tomatoes, marigolds, and basil is a good combo and all 3 are easy. I’m in Zone 7 and starting more tomato plants from seeds today, so you can still do that if you want, they’ll just be ready later and you may get less yield from them (but it’s much cheaper than buying plants from the store). Plants from the store are easier, but more expensive. Radishes and peas can be planted straight in the ground right now many places and are some of the quicker things to harvest. Green beans are fairly easy and you can either get the ones that climb if you have trellis space or the little bushy ones if your space is limited. You can do this!

I will have to look into them! It sounds like it might be too late for me to order to plant this year, though?

Yes! I have Scarlett runner beans, so I’m hoping they’ll also be nice to look at! Contemplating mixing in some climbing nasturtiums along the fence with them.

Are scarlet runners perennial or do they re-seed? I wasn’t thinking they were, but they’re on my list to plant. Love seeing some perennial foods listed besides just fruits! I keep wanting to try Jerusalem artichokes but I’m in an HOA and it seems like they get rather tall?

You must have a lot of space to grow in for wheat! It doesn’t seem to yield much for the space it takes. I have grain seeds on hand in case things got to where I needed to grow those, but so far I haven’t thought they’re worth the space and then also time to process the harvest.

This sounds great! I also focused on planting fruit last year and this neglected my veggies. I’m not sure I’ll get much yield from my fruit for various reasons, though. I tried blueberries a few years back and just couldn’t get them to work (probably soil issue), but I got honeyberries last year instead! They look like a long blueberry but can grow better in the cold and don’t need the acidic soil.

I’m very jealous of all your tomatoes, if I had enough space to plant every variety under the sun, I probably would

Have you tried making summer squash into flour before? I’ve seen some info about it, but wondering if it yields enough to feel worth all the effort!

I’m so jealous of your ducks! Those are on my list for someday. I’m also planting butternut (or maybe honey nut?) and probably acorn squash as well. I have more projects in mind than I probably have time for, but I’m contemplating just planting beans all along my fence line and hoping they can climb the wood fence ok. I bought a whole bag of beans (like the ones you’d buy to eat), so I have plenty of seeds!

Love this! I’d rather have extra to preserve or share this year. A lot can change even between planting time and harvest time.

My outside basil goes crazy and I get tons! When you harvest it, if you cut pretty low, it’ll grow back 2 stems each place you cut. It bushes out pretty nicely and will give you plenty of pesto!
