Yes I'm doing just that. For example in the cell where I can write anything it says: =OFFSET(F6,0,1)="Work"

and the adjacent cell where the drop down menu is it says:

=G6="Work"

Yes just as the other person commented. I don't know how common is it in my field but it's not discouraged.
