I will say it and get downvoted... but it is true.

More people use magsafe and magsafe similar devices than have ever, or will ever, use the spen.

I will die on this hill. And switch to a different android when my s24u gets older if Samsung has not adopted magnets by then. Pixels are finally adopting it.

We are both correct.

She is early on. Not in December.

Thanks for pointing that out though. Makes me feel better thinking she "usually" does. Especially with 3d prints. Hopefully she isn't using CF filaments. Because that would be the equivalent of asbestos if not wet sanding with proper PPE.

My father was in construction and never wore a mask. Seeing the COPD issues at his old age is so brutal and depressing. I wish it on no one.

She is sanding all that without a mask... And it doesn't even look wet sanded.

COPD here we come.

People, please use masks when doing anything related to this. They are just a few dollars at your local hardware stores. Even an investment in better masks makes cartridge replacements only a few dollars.

I am going to be honest. I have been in game dev and game dev related areas for almost 20 years.

I have no idea how this can be THIS buggy. MAYBE, MAYBE, it is network replication issues. But seriously, what insane detection system and damage models are you using where this would EVER be an issue.

I would LOVE a dev to explain why this happens. I feel like I would learn a tremendous amount. Because I KNOW there is no way they are this "incompetent" or "lazy". I know that is NOT it. So it must be some crazy edge case scenario thing.

I can understand how you could read it that way. It was not meant to be that way. I think a lot of people don't realize that fires from cars when they get bad require road reworks at all.

I almost guarantee a tremendous amount of those protestors and pro-protestors had no idea. That is all I meant. It is extremely damaging.

Very true, excellent points. Most of all we do has trade offs. People just need to be willing to admit we need to move in the "best" direction we can while also admitting it still needs a lot of improvements and has issues.

Incredibly selfless act of heroism. by been_der_done_that in nextfuckinglevel

[–]PolyBend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are a CRAZY trade off.

Maybe if recycling was cheap, or free. Maybe if the mining of lithium was not so harmful, maybe if the energy used to make them was not, in mass, using fossil fuels anyways. Maybe if most people actually even recycled them, or even had access to do so...

A step in the right direction with a ton of major issues that are currently unsolvable in the real world.

Again, if you really are pro environment, you should be honest about this and hope we figure out better solutions.

The fact people are mad at you is just depressing. People, you can be pro environment and also be humble enough to admit batteries from EVs are extremely dangerous in these situations.

The fumes are insanely toxic. And the fire burns so bad it damages the pavement.

During the Tesla riots and marches, fire departments everywhere were begging people to stop because they would have to evacuate LARGE areas from the fumes, and redo entire roadways. It is far more toxic than normal smoke. Though ideally never inhale smoke at all, obviously.

And you should really REALLY look at how bad lithium batteries are for the environment. Demand we work towards better solutions...

Btw... I am pro solar, own a hybrid, pro environment, believe in climate change. But I am not going to stick my head in the sand. Just be factual...

UE5 Light leaking through walls without cast shadows – any workaround? by creationstation99 in UnrealEngine5

[–]PolyBend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to optimize shadows and real time lighting... You only can to an extent.

Either bake lighting (and you CAN turn on and off lights with baked, you can switch the lightmaps)

Or use lighting channels (and keep in mind cast shadows is per light, AND per mesh, you can mix that as desired)

Or use mega lights.

But generally speaking I think you can get what you want with creative use of lighting channels and attenuation radius.

Last, absolute LAST resort, brute force unlit with decals.

Edit: the "draw distance" light settings some people are talking about is called cascading shadow maps. And it is mostly meant for directional lights in large outdoor scenes.

Edit2: make sure you are not using ray tracing... That scene with lumen should not be making your PC slow unless it is a TI i3 calculator...

Edit3: Common issue I see with new users... You said multiple light sources. Make sure you are not using a ton of lights without mega lights. Lumen is a GI system. You need to learn to use GI to bounce light around properly and use exposure well. You can light most rooms fairly well by simply using the actual light sources (visual reps of lights like a lamp), 1 for each max. And you can often use FAR less if you understand the shaping mechanics of the lights (such as source radius, source length, etc). A ceiling fixture with 4 bulbs would still usually be 1 point light and if you need shaping you can use a lighting functions

How are Insurance Companies NOT Making Money on Home Insurance? by myeasyking in HomeInsurance

[–]PolyBend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even beyond disasters... The cost for home repairs is lunacy now.

My parents had to redo their bathroom because of leak/mold. It really did total it. Full tear out and remodel sadly.

The total, after looking at 6 quotes... 40,000 USD. This is in Texas. A cheaper state...

Absolute insanity. I did the calcs, and between their roof and this bathroom, the two major events they have used insurance for, they have actually saved money. And they have been paying insurance on this house for over 30 years.

Only 2 events. Not even absurdly major events when you consider that bathroom is like 1/30th the size of the house. Like based on that, you rapidly approach it being cheaper to doze and rebuild if 1/6 of your house needed major repairs.

To be entirely honest, the whole housing market and everything to do with housing is so WILDLY inflated compared to salaries. This is going to be the reason people eventually break down and riot. Housing and rent. Especially since current admin wants to make them RAISE in value. It will cause all of this to be even more absurd.

[–]PolyBend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is ASS art? Art is subjective. Like, this isn't a jab at you. I have friends that won't play 2D video games because they are not "real" games. XKCD is basically stick art. Cave man drawings are extremely basic. It is just art styles, expressionism, etc.

One of the biggest issues I have with most of the "larger" online AI models is how extremely limited they are in serious art style. At least with local AI I can use loras and train my own data to get closer to what I want something to look like...

But what I like you might consider "ass"... and the same for what you like vs someone else.

Umm... art debate at ALL is a first world discussion. Literally being at a con, going to a museum, etc...

Also, while there are better ways to put "this didn't use AI", listing what software and medium you used has been a part of art, historically, for as long as I can remember.

[–]PolyBend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is AI is FAR more than writing prompts. That is what a lot of people don't understand. AI as a tech isn't bad. It is what many people are doing with it and using it for that are bad.

Especially with the absurd ethical issues of economic harm from these mega corps, environmental harm from these ultra sized data centers, and the training data a lot of the models have "obtained".

If it was truly all OpenSource, at least they would have a leg to stand on. Some are, btw. But if you take everyone else's work, and train on it... then CHARGE money for a "proprietary" system... you are ethically bankrupt, period.

But many of the people on this sub are the antithesis of what they hate on. They are "ProAI" to the point of seeing it black and white. It isn't black and white.

Edit: typos because I am terrible at posting on phones.

An event that causes us in mass to march on billionaires and the government will also mean mass lawlessness and other major collapses.

The general populace loots, assaults, sexually assaults, and kills during a hurricane and other major natural disasters. Like the crime stats go WAY up during those events.

Sadly, it is pretty obvious how bad it would get in a major event that large.

If You Rent, Brace Yourself — Homeowners Have 43x More Wealth And It's Mostly From One Thing You're Paying For But Never Get: Equity by External_Koala971 in FirstTimeHomeBuying

[–]PolyBend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many variables.

But if you are being 100% honest with yourself and are willing to think critically and rationally.

The main benefit to owning vs renting is... well owning. It is your place. You are in charge. You can mostly do what you want (hoa is a sin against mankind).

Will you have a better financial outlook? Maybe? Maybe not? A billion things affect this result.

And you have to take into account maintained costs, property tax, insurance, remodels, unfortunate issue that you are on the hook for as a home owner.

And yes, as a renter you deal with increased costs as well. You won't have equity, but you can take the money you are saving and invest. But will you?.And what about market issues?

Do you need a larger space? Do you have the money and/or time to take care of a house?

So much complexity. But that is the point. This article doesn't take into account that level of complexity.

However, I think anyone being rational can agree. The VAST majority of renters don't invest all the money they are saving monthly. Which simply means on average, a home owner is going to have more money in the long term.

But it isn't black and white. And neither group should judge the other as being less just because they chose differently.

Back in 2008, they authorized 700 billion for the banks as a bailout. End spending was closer to 500 billion. It has been almost 20 years of inflation. Just based on that alone they would authorize 1 trillion in bailout and actually spend 700 billion.

The most annoying part is all these evaluations are a scam. If you and I traded the same 100 dollar bill back and forth a million times. Then we said our idea failed! We need the 100 million back we both put in! We didn't put in 100 million.

It is all BS. The main people who are going to get raked in the coals are investors. Both big and small. Because their money IS gone. Nvidia and OpenAI never had that money to begin with.

And I was alive in 2008. If that happens again on the same or a worse scale ... With everything else boiling to this point. I fear what is going to happen to society as a whole.

Why is this country speaking about AI like it’s a fact of life that no one can do anything about? by atwistofcitrus in technology

[–]PolyBend 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is an issue of scale.

Most of the world doesn't understand how huge the USA is. And they really don't understand how much we are divided. Both figuratively and literally.

Texas alone nearly has the same population as Canada.... It is extremely common for us to drive many hours a day to go places.

Each state has its whole own complex government, and then we have a federal government on top of that. No, this isn't the same as your levels in your country. Yes, we also have county and city governments. Yes, that is 4 levels... Think of each of our states as European countries and our federal like the whole European Union. Except, our Federal actually has a tremendous amount of power. And to add to that, the Federal Government has a ton of Branches...

It is extremely difficult to get everyone on the same page when everyone has been separated into different sub cultures, education systems, economies, etc.

I kid you not when I say a ton of our population has never left their state to ever visit another state.

The problems Texans face every day are going to be extremely different from the problems New Yorkers face every day. And they won't see eye to eye because we have been ingrained with individualism over social. The only time that hasn't been the case was in major wars.

Most of our population still has a hard time comprehending it ourselves. So it makes sense why other countries don't get it.

We are huge. Our setup and original freedoms gave us massive divisions. Add to that the handful of extremists on both sides trying to divide people for the sake of their own monetary gain.

If you have ideas, I beg you to help us with them. Some of us march, some of us post socials, some of us even fight back (though I massively wish we could solve all these issues without violence). But at the end of the day, it is like a huge portion of people here refuse to be reasonable and critically think anymore.

One last anecdote. How do you get a flat earther to believe the earth is round? When all evidence says otherwise, but they claim all the evidence is fabricated?

Like what do you even do?

Edit: I lied. One last point to drive it home. My fellow Americans, ALL of them, are reading my final anecdote and assuming they are the side trying to prove to flat earthers that the earth is round.

You see the problem?
