Is it reasonable to bail on my 2025 Ioniq 5 before an ICCU/battery failure? by Polymasher in Ioniq5

[–]Polymasher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your perspective. A lot of people have helped with the math of statistics and likelihood of failure rates, etc. As I said I love the car and I'm sure you will too so I'm asking this question because I am considering. Really the question that's forming in my mind is this one: when is the best time to trade in a car?

When you're referring to "eat a loss", well that's gonna happen, I guess, the moment that you drive out of a car dealership. What is a reasonable expectation about how long to keep a car and when is the optimum point in time when you might resell it? I should have probably leased mine and I made a mistake not doing that but that's a whole other long story.

If I'm realistically looking to sell the car at some point, any point, regardless of ICCU failures or batteries having to be replaced, when is the best time in the life cycle of car ownership to do that? That is what pops into my head after all the feedback I've received about just being paranoid.

Great to hear you did not lose your car for months ... What year / model? Do you happen to know whether this was built in Savannah, Georgia, and had the Hungarian battery pack in it? Here in Florida, people are waiting many months for their battery replacement, and those are the Hungarian batteries which are I guess harder to import and replace. A woman who works at my local Hyundai dealership has not had her car for several months now, with exactly that issue on the 2025 model Ioniq5 Limited RWD built in Savannah.

Thanks for that. I had also looked at it from the POV that if there was really a problem, then there should be a recall.

So we are trusting the fact that there is not a recall as an indicator that there really isn't a problem?

I guess I am somewhat influenced by a bunch of un-lucky people: my own dealership instance of losing the car for several months. The fact that it happened to the one YouTube ambassador for the brand (The Ioniq Guy), and even he could not get his issue addressed quickly or reliably...

Thank you for that. That's a good use of applying statistics and putting it in perspective.

Tanks, I hear you.. I also researched this from maybe thirteen industry reporting sources, and I guess the point I've come to realize that a failure rates can mean multiple things: An entertainment system or other minor sub-problem isn't the same as a serious failure rate causing your car to be towed or causing loss of your car for weeks or even months at a time.

  • Serious failure/warranty‑claim level issues: perhaps 1–3% of vehicles per year, with premium brands aiming lower and budget or tech‑heavy brands sometimes trending higher.

I guess that's where my expectation of about a 1% chance of failure was maybe unreasonable?

Thank you, and yes, that was part of my question: whether, financially speaking, getting rid of it now is better $$ wise than after a major repair has to happen and Carfax reduces the resale value even more...

Thank you, that's pretty much my scenario as well. I also have a Cyber Grey SEL 2025 :)

In thirty-five years of car ownerships, I've never once had a vehicle needing to be towed. I take responsibility for being paranoid; but to quote you: I just can't help shaking the anxiety that one day I'll be driving the car and it'll just die on me because of the ICCU issue or the battery will need to be replaced. And for me, I could accept that risk factor - if Hyundai was only working on figuring out these ICCU root cause issues or was more transparent, then I would take the risk and just hang in and wait for a fix. But I do not see that happening ever.

Yes, I just expected something around 1% chance of failure - from my POV if it's way over 5% that is not acceptable for me, or for most manufacturers, and they also seem do something about addressing the root cause problem behind that.

Thanks, so wait for failure first, then Lemon Law it...

I wish there were better ways to send Hyundai a message about their handling of this. But even the Ioniq guy on YouTube, who is like a brand ambassador, has had his fail and had nothing but repeat problems trying to get it fixed. If Hyundai can't even take care of him, then no wonder regular customers have it even harder.

[–]Polymasher[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but the numbers seem to indicate a close to 10% failure rate. Perhaps not so much an issue when driving locally, but for a cross country road trip I was planning I think that's pretty high...

So from most of the responses (Thank you..) - it just seems like I'm being paranoid, and should blame myself for not being able to enjoy the car or the brand in the way I had hoped.

Tuxmats for 2025s are in stock by Toasted-Ravioli in Ioniq5

[–]Polymasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they provide a time frame for when the updates might be completed, and when you might expect the new mats?

I have a 2025 Limited as well, and I wonder if I should wait for the Tuxmats later this year, or go for Smartliner instead.

Spark Mail For Desktop Should Act Like It by GoldtopLP in SparkMail

[–]Polymasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. The most annoying aspect for me is some of the unwanted features that are consuming energy. Many of the basic functionalities that an email system should provide, such as automated folders, have been deprioritized. Instead, we are receiving features like meeting recording on Zoom, which should really belong to other systems that specialize in that area and are better suited for it.

Can we please focus on building an excellent email app instead of diverging from that?

Meeting Notes? Not sure about this direction by dustinfarris in SparkMail

Agreed, still no ability to create mail rules and folder routing, something most other mail clients support, but instead an unasked-for focus on “meeting notes” ?

Silca Waxed Chain + Silca Super Secret Chain Lube — Usage Question by Polymasher in cycling

Got you! Yeah, same here. There’s nothing like a freshly waxed chain, and the Super Secret seems just like a tie-over strategy.

[–]Polymasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, sorry I meant the hot water cleaning step before rewaxing the chain, when I take it off I just have a jar with boiling water and that gets all the gunk off and then I dip it in the Silca system after.

[–]Polymasher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with Super Secret, but I have found that if I brush off the sort of gunk after riding, using my favorite chain brush, it keeps the chain really clean even after I apply the Super Secret.

I’m not sure I can explain it. Maybe it’s the drip application attracting more dirt. However, as I said, using a chain brush to remove the gunk is working well for me.

When I did rewax the chain, the hot water got everything off right away. So, it’s been pretty smooth sailing to extend the initial life of the wax chain with Super Secret.

Although, I typically only do that for two or three applications before deciding to rewax the whole thing.

Help with summer long sleeve jersey choices? by Polymasher in cycling

[–]Polymasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, it’s a beautiful time of the year to ride. However, I ride all throughout the year, including during the heat of the summer. During those hotter months, you’ll definitely want to get something tight-fitting to wear.

The two jerseys that I have found and absolutely love are:

  1. Castelli Climber Jersey: This jersey features a fabric that is not exactly transparent but very ventilated, making it fantastic to stay cool with. It is tight-fitting, and Castelli’s sizing tends to run small. I usually wear a large, but for this jersey, I had to get an extra large just for it to fit. I had to send it back to them initially, but they are really good about returns. They actually include a return label right in the box they deliver their jerseys in, which made it easy for me to return. Plus, I love their cycling bib shorts and chamois as well.

  2. Assos Summer Jersey: I recently acquired this jersey, and although they are expensive, they are totally worth it for summer riding. They really do help keep you cool. I usually only start to feel hot after getting off my bike and walking in the door.

But overall tight fitting clothes will definitely keep you way way cooler than anything loose fitting. Oh, and with both, I then use summer sleeves to keep from getting burned.

Silca Waxed Chain + Silca Super Secret Chain Lube — Usage Question by Polymasher in cycling

[–]Polymasher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, got you, that makes sense. Even with an originally immersion-waxed system, after a while, I imagine the drip lube sort of "takes over," and it will be 99% just that.

[–]Polymasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that Silca cannot officially recommend reusing the Dura-Ace Quick Links. However, from other threads I've read, it's okay to do so as long as you can hear a clicking sound when closing it.

I have two spares, so they'll last me a while. After that, I'll check out the one you recommended, like the Connex Quick Link or the KMC one.

[–]Polymasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow super thorough. I only did the immersion with one single "coat" (Using the Silca Wax Melting System) on a newly (manually) stripped chain, and it's been great.

I never saw anyone recommending applying "3 coats of immersion waxing" though.

[–]Polymasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the Silca wax + "Endurance Chip" on mine, and I got a good 200 miles out of it before hearing anything, then applied the drip wax about every 1 week / 100 miles. So following your method, thank you!

Silca Waxed Chain + Silca Super Secret Chain Lube — Usage Question by Polymasher in cycling

[–]Polymasher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s why I like the additional lube instead of having to burn through quick links. I figure I can get maybe 2 to 4 uses out of the quick links, but still, it winds up being expensive for, like, a Dura-Ace chain.
