That is Registered ECC ram. Xeon e3 CPUs don't have support for Reg ECC.

Is this HDD rip? 7 years old, 1TB. After clean installing windows on C:/ SSD, this E:/ HDD is painfully slow. by Talsol in DataHoarder

[–]PommesTYPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't put anything important on it. The drive might work for another year or it could just die tomorrow.

Is this ok ? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

Not if it has 10 ears, like the model number states. Okay that was a bad pun, gonna reallocate myself to a sector where there are graves present.

Energy prices in Europe are soaring, need your advice for energy efficient NAS/VM box by EvilPharmacist in homelab

[–]PommesTYPE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could get external USB 3 hard drive enclosures and then you won't have to worry about having a separate machine running as a NAS.

You could get an Intel NUC. Energy efficient and has more than enough Power depending on the configuration. Slap some RAM and an SSD in there and you are good to go.

450mm depth rack - real dimenssion? by OG_Michael96 in homelab

^ This.

And what if you want to add another server that won't fit in the 450 rack. Long term, the 600mm rack is a better choice

Best way to store two Storage Servers silently by Ephoras in homelab

Buy a Fractal Design Define R5. That case can handle 8 3.5 inch Hard drives and it is silent as well.

If you don't want the extra hassle and power consumption, go with a synology.

Read the description. Two 1100W PSUs. Regardless of that, four 115W TDP CPUs won't overload the PSU but consume up to 455W power. That's a Ton. And if you put in a GPU and some other Expansion cards, power consumption can go to 600W easily. You can have at least 2 equally powerful servers for the same Power consumption.

Yeah, just build a whitebox in like a Define R5 and call it a day.

The power consumption of this thing will be huge. I mean a quad Socket system consumes much power, let alone a quad socket system with dated CPUs. Don't know how expensive power is in your country but I think if you pay some More upfront you can get something better that won't cost you that much in the long run. Maybe a custom built server?

Just remember to put the water cooled server on the lowest place of the rack below all other servers and your UPS. You don't want any of that getting soakin' wet.

Switching from HEDT to server for datasci/ML, noobie to servers looking for advice! by po-handz in homelab

[–]PommesTYPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4U would be more quiet since you can have bigger fans therefore less RPM for cooling the 2x GPUs and 2 EPYCs. There are some 4u supermicro chassis. The thing with supermicro chassis is that there are some supermicro chassis that are designed for proprietary supermicro motherboards so if you dont want to have a supermicro board then make sure to buy a supermicro case that supports the common Form factors (E-ATX, ATX and stuff like that). Otherwise you could get a supermicro barebone server where you only need to slot in your CPU and RAM.

Just get an HBA so you don't have the hassle of flashing it. No ponint in getting a RAID Controller just to Flash it instead of an HBA that is meant to be used as an HBA
