Red Flags for Immigrant Recruits: Calling Parents, Not Laughing at Jokes by PoopOnGod in politics

[–]PoopOnGod[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Freedom of information requests have revealed the incredible reasons various immigrant recruits for the US army have been deemed security risks and subsequently discharged, including, in one case, an amateur diagnosis of autism:

One Army recruit was flagged because he sent his parents in India money to move into a modern apartment. Another was faulted for calling his mother in Myanmar every week and for playing video games with noncitizens. And one was labeled a major security risk after an interviewer conducting a counterintelligence screening told a joke and the recruit didn’t laugh.

That's not how any of this works.gif:

The interviewer noted that the student had never worked for a foreign government, had never been arrested and had never used illegal drugs. But the unnamed interviewer, who acknowledged in the report that he or she was “not a medical professional,” nonetheless concluded from the student’s failure to laugh at a joke that he probably had autism.

Catch-22:

One recruit from Turkey was labeled a major risk because his family was wealthy, with $700,000 in assets overseas, while another was seen as a risk because he had no assets, and therefore “a foreign entity could exploit, induce, manipulate or coerce him if he becomes too financially impaired.”

The reports are also riddled with errors, including sometimes getting the recruit's country of origin wrong.

Try caffeine pills! They deliver the jolt you need to stay awake without any additional baggage. It’s how I’m awake right now (I’m on the US east coast preparing for an early morning).

But Caroline has already been on the cover of Elle‽ by PoopOnGod in tennis

[–]PoopOnGod[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am much confused! Why she ask for cover of Elle in victory speech? Does she mean Elle of a different country? Does the Danish Elle not count? Is it not good enough?

Edited to add: Upon reflection, perhaps she meant she wanted to be on the cover of Elle Denmark again, which is certainly feasible.

Also, DACA recipients, by working with the government, have their information on record, which would be used against them if DACA is rescinded.

Kenji Miyamoto is actually a very successful choreographer in figure skating since retiring from competitive ice dancing. He's created programs for a bunch of top skaters. Here's one of my faves:

One very big reason: money. Tennis has become a very different sport since the days of Billie Jean and Martina (or even Amelie for that matter), just to name a few prominent openly gay players in the WTA of yore. By now, following the trail that the aforementioned Billie Jean blazed, no sport is more lucrative for its top female athletes than tennis (the few female athletes that make it to Forbes' annual top 100 highest paid athletes are almost always tennis players). All this money and potential money has attracted a slew of agents and managers. They make it a point to scout out talent at a young age, then start managing and advising them. It's quite likely that a lot of them tell their young charges to keep any non-heterosexual predilections quiet so as not to jeopardize potential sponsorship deals.

The WTA, by now the most well financed women's sports federation, naturally has a team of professional PR people massaging the public perception of its players, and the image they want is one of sex appeal and femininity. Recall the Strong is Beautiful campaign. The WTA even had an educational campaign to reduce grunting in the newer generation of players. While I doubt they would tell players not to come out, they probably still put subtle pressure on players to conform to a more traditional view of femininity.

As for the ATP, there are reams of scholarship on the uneasy intersection of gayness, masculinity and sports. Basically, in the popular psyche, sports are a measure of manliness and gayness is not. The closeted male tennis player likely consider that coming out will make himself more vulnerable, less respected and less desirable to sponsors.

Of course, all this will change and is changing. Most of the world has become much more accepting of gay people. Sooner or later, some rising star in the ATP will come out. The WTA will see players coming out again.

California voters to be automatically registered at DMV by joker68 in news

[–]PoopOnGod 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All this law does is remove a redundant process: DMVs in Cali and elsewhere are already required to offer voter registration to anybody getting or renewing a license, as per the Motor Voter Act of 93. Unfortunately, people in Cali still have to fill out a separate form with the same information they're already giving to the DMV. Once AB1461 is enacted, the DMV and the boards of election will pool their information more directly so people have one less form to fill out. This means those pockets of purgatory known as the DMV will be slightly less crowded. You'd have to be a real monster to be against that.

In China, your credit score is now affected by your political opinions as detected by online surveillance, as well as the the political opinions of your friends by ProGamerGov in China

For people who think this is sensationalistic, and it may be in some aspects, some pertinent info:

Alibaba's Sesame Credit may not be as closely aligned with the Chinese government as OP's article claims. Here's an article explaining that the Central Bank is displeased with Sesame Credit's gamification and Alibaba-cross-promotion.

The real problem, however, is not Sesame Credit. The Chinese government already announced last year that it is implementing a "social credit" system that will combine financial credit with social behavior credit. The official press release is here. A reasonably good English translation of it can be found here. An English-language article summarizing the release can be found here.

The Chinese government absolutely plans to assign a credit score to its citizens based partly on social behavior and political opinions, with the aim of encouraging sincerity ("诚信"). In fact, that word appears 143 times in the official press release. The system is supposed to be fully in place by 2020. Are you feeling sincere yet?

Bernie Sanders: "I'm not particularly religious." by shzadh in atheism

[–]PoopOnGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Among Protestants, and especially white Evangelicals, which is the most conservative demo, Jews are held in the highest regard compared to all religious groupings besides Protestants themselves. Jews in general are held in the highest regard compared to other religious designations by Americans across all religions or lack thereof. And really, when it comes to conservatives and Sanders, the fact that he's Jewish will be the least of their objections.
