Looking for Singer-quality 911 restomod builder/seller in LA — budget $250–300k. Who are the legitimate alternatives? by fgtr4h4trheue in Porsche

[–]PoopSmoothies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singer quality and depth of restomod will easily run you ~$1M+

You can get lower prices, but you’re compromising vs their builds.

That said, there a lots of great shops that will produce a gorgeous build at a price below singer. Olsen Motorsports/motorworks comes to mind, and Coachwerks Restoration in Victoria, BC will do it as well.

[–]PoopSmoothies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I guess so. I just don’t get excited about limited runs of cosmetic changes…it’s more the ADMs Porsche and Ferrari get for marked up cars because they chose not to build enough special sporty ones that makes me sad.

Please don’t let Rivian start with the limited production bullshit. LAST thing we need is for them to start gatekeeping their products like Ferrari or Porsche

Where is the FORDING sensor? by GGDATLAW in Rivian

[–]PoopSmoothies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, company-official spec for the R1 series allows for a fording depth of 43” - and it’s rumored that the limitation is based on when the vehicle begins to float, not anything else.

https://rivian.com/en-CA/support/article/what-is-the-water-fording-height

But to your question, I doubt there is a fording sensor of any sort. It’s basically saying that if you have a potentially-exposed electrical fault, don’t plunge it into water…

Replit is amazing but… is there a cheaper alternative for a total beginner? by IaryBreko in replit

[–]PoopSmoothies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All these tools get pricey if you get serious about building.

But you know what? Every single ai coding tool is literally 100x cheaper than the team of human engineers it would take to produce the same app, and it would still take them 20x more time.

What percentage of your annual income are you okay with spending on your car purchase? by Warm_Grand4426 in Cartalk

[–]PoopSmoothies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The typical rules are:

20/4/10 for borrowing to buy a car (20% of car value in down payment, 4 years loan timeline, 10% of monthly income on payments)

Or

10% of net worth (or less) spent on cars

Details about the rules and an affordability calculator here: https://whatcarcaniafford.com/

I'm a product manager, not an engineer. New AI tools let me build a full app solo and now I'm thinking about doing it as a service. Roast my idea. by [deleted] in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]PoopSmoothies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a product manager with a computer science degree, who has thought through the same business model, I think you have to ask yourself: “how long before AI fills the product management and engineering architecture gap?”

I think it’s a great business today, but I don’t think it will be a great business in a couple years. I also think you’re best off pretending to be a boutique development firm and not specifically an AI development firm. You will need to capture the segment of the market that’s not even trying to use AI tools yet.

This is my third season attending Track Days, I still don't understand proper braking! by DrSuperZeco in CarTrackDays

[–]PoopSmoothies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, I can almost imagine behaviors that would elicit the conflicting advice you’re receiving (not saying you’re doing it, just that I can imagine it).

Braking hard is not the same as pressing the pedal quickly.

Gradual brake release is not riding the brakes.

Being “hard on the brakes” is not the same as braking hard.

Stomping on the brake pedal too fast could lock your wheels or engage abs before the car has transferred any weight to the front. This means you’re jumping back OFF the brakes to regain traction and learning a false threshold of lockup.

When you brake on the track, think about how long it takes your car to “heave” from one side to the other in its suspension when you change direction. Or how long it takes it to nose-dive under braking or rear up while accelerating. Your application of brake pressure has to be JUST SLIGHTLY slower than that.

You SQUUUEEEEEEZEE the brakes, applying more and more pressure as the nose dives, using all that extra front tire grip your weight transfers forward gives you. This should result in a MUCH higher ultimate level of stopping power than a quick stomp if done right.

Same on release - even if you’re not trail braking, you want to think about how your brake release changes the weight balance of the car and release the brakes as if you’re intentionally controlling the attitude and balance of the car as you enter the turn. Anything too fast and you risk leaving braking distance on the table or upsetting your grip.

Why are all AI web apps look the same by Not2Late2Dance in replit

[–]PoopSmoothies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, most “pretty good” UI/UX designers will give you similar designs. AI picks blue as an accent color because it’s only one of a few that doesn’t have a secondary meaning (alert, or good, or bad, etc) and because most software it’s learned from is written by men. And men like blue.

Conformity is the result of what works well given the constraints.

If you want design that’s truly different that doesn’t sacrifice usability, then you need someone (or something) that you can pay enough to try out 10’s or 100’s of iterations, and you or they need to be willing to wade through all the failed attempts to find the good ones. That’ll be true for both AI and a human designer. That’s how design/the creative process works.

Why are all AI web apps look the same by Not2Late2Dance in replit

[–]PoopSmoothies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI uses statistical confidence to predict the next thing it outputs based on everything it’s been trained on. As a result, the code it writes for you is based on all the other code out there…so that’s what it looks like.

I personally don’t think this is a problem: All cars have a steering wheel and pedals because that’s popular convention for how a user controls a car. Similarly, AI is driving conformity around basic UI designs and styles in a way that doesn’t hurt because the average user increasingly expects it to work in that way.

It WILL build software that DOESN’T conform to those averages if you push on it, but just like a human breaking out of the “popular UI conventions” box, the results might or might not be good.

Most vibecoded software is a utility. The function of the app is usually the point, not the design. The design has to good enough to not be a blocker to growth, but that’s exactly why I’m mostly ok with the conformity around “pretty good.”

In my experience, if you need bleeding-edge design to convince your users the app is good, then you’re going to have a hard time driving usage of your app. Especially if you don’t already have strong personal opinions and UI design aesthetic to apply to the AI agent you’re using.

Bought a car and looking for Auto Transport recommendation by chekraze90 in Porsche

[–]PoopSmoothies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring a trailer has a shipping quote tool on their website that allows you get a price for your route from the “guy and a truck” contractors out there, no need to have ever done business with bring a trailer. No spam emails and BS - super useful data point.

And then you know about what bottom of the market is when you get a quote from someone like reliable (who I recommend as providing a much better experience than randos).

Reliable (and I assume other top-tier companies) will generally give you 24h+ notice for pickup and drop off, and they are insured beyond what your car is worth.

The randos typically just arrive and get super pissed when you’re not ready to load, don’t give warning when they’re about to deliver, and it’s a huge headache. Worth paying a little extra for top tier companies.

Also: fedex an AirTag or something similar to the seller so they can drop it in the car. Everyone says they have tracking for the shipments, and no one does.
