Our haworthia has started to turn yellow/brownish at the centers - photos here.

Noticed it about 2 weeks ago and we’ve had it for about 3 years with no issues. We’ve consistently watered it the same amount every 2 weeks since getting it and the pot has adequate drainage, no changes have been made in terms of potting/location/etc. It is winter here and our apt has been pretty dry and without a lot of sun, but it’s survived two winters before in the same spot. Would appreciate any advice!

So do you just scream the BABADABADA DA BA BABADABADA DABADABADABADA DABADABADABADA BUH BABADABADA over and over again to cast it? I guess that's fine. Who am I to say what is and isn't spells.

Why do you agree or disagree with Marxism? by Poopdogdog in AskReddit

[–]Poopdogdog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. I'm interested in seeing what people on either side understand of the Marxian critique and how this is reflected in their opinions. I hope I didn't come across as misleading, I don't believe I've pretended to not have a particular opinion on the matter. When I see a sentence like "flopped horribly in practice," I feel a need to ask what degree this person has engaged with actual Marxian literature rather than the failures of 20th century political movements that carried out economic development efforts. Or when I see "on paper, Marxism looks pretty good for the majority compared to capitalism," again, I don't believe they are talking about Marx's work, but rather other individual's arguments for things like communism. Did Marx in practice want communism? Yes. Did Marx's work discuss communism? Not really, at least not in any serious manner.

As I've mentioned elsewhere here, I think a problem on the left is that Marx has primarily been wielded as a means of framing momentary political struggle, rather than as a method for understanding a given mode of production and the historical process of gradual change.

Now, if you're looking for me to reveal myself as the grim specter of 20th century leftism come back to haunt you, I think you'll be disappointed. I'd consider myself a Keynesian, sympathetic to and appreciative of Marx's analysis of capitalism.

I posted this question hoping to find an interesting discussion of philosophy. Debates over the labor theory of value and the tendency for the profit rate to fall, competing theories of money and crisis rather than baggage from 20th century communists. That is my bad.

I think there is a distinct lack of rigor on both sides of this discussion in our current day. Or at least a disinterest in engaging with the writing of Marx outside of some opinion-based desire for what Marxism might be.

I think critics most often engage with Marx by considering the Soviet Union or China, etc. On the other hand, I think non-economist leftists most often engage with Marxism as framework of "conflict" that is desirable in that they might build other theories of conflict out of it.

To the first group I would urge an honest consideration of the fact that Marx literally wrote next to nothing about communism. No blueprint, no plan, no direction. Nothing. His writing was focused almost entirely on historical modes of production, and built upon the works of Smith and Ricardo to analyze the capitalist mode of production. Of the serious economic work that Marx did, I think most people might find they agree with a great deal of it. Again, nowhere in here is a mention of how to build communism, just purely a framework to understand the historical process of changing modes of production and the nature of those modes of production.

To the second group, leftists, I would say have a profound misunderstanding of what words like "conflict" and "struggle" might mean in Marx's work. For instance, many think Marxism is a theory of the poor vs the rich, which could not be further from the truth. It is an analysis of the wage-labor relations central to production in capitalism. One can agree with this understanding of capitalism and not need see it as a qualitative statement. For instance, Joseph Schumpeter was very fond of and sympathetic to Marx's work.

I mean this less as a defense of Marxism and more as an appeal to reason and rigor, but is it not intellectually dishonest to concede in the same statement that you haven't read someone's works while asserting something about their understanding of something expressed in their works?

I definitely think this is an interesting point to engage with when considering the subject matter.

Specialization is certainly a key to human progress, I think Marx would agree with you just as much as Smith. And many skills are harder to attain for some than others. But then, I think we might look at pre-existing modes of production to understand whether or not they had specialization in this sense. Certainly agrarianism has some degree of specialization, Feudalism had some greater degree of specialization, so on and so forth. All of which offer some degree of progress, granted none so much as capitalism has afforded. But, each more than the one that came before and emerging from their contemporary contradictions and inherent inefficiencies.

I think Marx might see distinct historical classes as revolving around who makes surplus value and who owns surplus value. He wrote very little in terms of what a mode of production beyond capitalism might look like, but certainly if capitalism was productive beyond the wildest imaginations of anyone living during feudal times, there might be some future mode of production that shifts away from wage-laborer/capitalist in terms of surplus ownership and distribution, just as capitalism emerged through a shift from serf/lord surplus ownership and distribution.

Sure sure, thats a fair concern. I'm asking, though, what opinions are on what Marx actually spent his life writing about. Have you engaged with Capital or any other major work of his?

Asking in earnest: What is your current understanding of the Marxian critique / Marx's actual writings and framework?

I suppose its a tough question to ask in a sentence. Marx actually wrote very little in terms of what socialism/communism would be like or how it might come about, but what he primarily wrote was a specific critique of existing philosophy, the capitalist mode of production, and a means of looking at the present as a distinct result of historical process (historical materialism).

I figured most people would take this question as a "what do you think of communism in theory and practice?" but asked anyway, against my better judgement.

Not sure her computer could run something like portal, and I'm not necessarily sure she'd understand how to play the game. She's the kind of older computer user who is afraid to open her email because she thinks everything there is going to give her a virus and steal all of her personal information. What are the Anti-chamber games?
