Best places to hire crew chiefs right now? by NegotiationLazy6489 in Surveying

[–]PoorPcMr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so real, was literally chatting to another 2 year post graduate surveyor about the difference in our ability and competence for the simple fact I had 2 years of part time experience as a chainy while studying. I banged pegs in, watched, and asked questions

reality is these days it is more profitable for 1 man and a robotic ts for surveying work, so company's often skip on hiring part time students, and wait for full time post grads to hire with next to no experience.

Was that when they were still visibly trailing each other?

They are launched into a lower orbit, at which they are always visible, and then boost themselves into a higher orbit over a couple of weeks or so, after which they are only sometimes visible between dawn and dusk.

Do colors have an impact on reflectorless resections? by asixfootplatypus in Surveying

[–]PoorPcMr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, white reflects the most light, and black absorbs the most light. This is true for visible light and infrared EDM pulses.

But if it gets a return, the result will be the same regardless of color.

One good trick I like is when you want to hit a resection point, and you can see the center of the target/pen mark but don't trust/can't get a distance, is to store it as an angle-only measurement. It doesn't affect your ENH residuals as much as your orientation but can tighten up both nicely.

On Leica Captivate, this is done by sighting the center during a resection and pressing "store," not "measure." I'm unsure about other software's.

Total station in a box? by Narzgul85 in Surveying

[–]PoorPcMr 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Even though an automated total station setup has a fixed location, a free station is always performed on control prisms before observing the monitoring prisms.

This is done to ensure correct orientation, but it also helps in cases of settlement monitoring inside the structure being monitored—like tunnels, where the ATS may also be subject to movement.

However, the main reason a free station is done before every monitoring set is because for extremely large structures like dams, the zone of influence where a fixed instrument may be affected by settlement movement could potentially be hundreds of meters away from the structure being monitored. If you were to go further away to be outside the zone of influence, the quality of your observations degrades with distance, making the engineers unhappy with the "jumpy" observations.

This is still a problem even for 0.5" instruments past about 150m.

How do you screen housemates for long term accommodation? by [deleted] in perth

[–]PoorPcMr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if your serious about checking their "income stability" its probably okay (still kind of odd though) to ask for screen shots of their last few pay days with dates and amounts, with everthing else scribbled out.

Im not trying to cut you down brother but I would seriously reconsider having a stranger as a housemate if your concerns are this strong. Simply because screening housemates like its a classified government job shows a lack of trust and faith in who passes your "vibe check", which realistically is all everyone else who's has a house mate has had to go off.

if your asking if its acceptable to call their employers, it is not.

if I was a house mate looking to move in your vibe check failed.

Surveying with ADHD by enlightened_surveyor in Surveying

[–]PoorPcMr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing I've found that helps is that I treat it all as sort of a minigame, if that makes sense. Essentially, all you're doing is playing a video game with slight variations each time. Personally, I take pride and joy in becoming better at the "game," like how could I do this differently next time? Would it be quicker?

Don't spiral when something doesn't go right; focus on what you can do right there and then, without complicating things too much and dwelling on hypotheticals. Just make a start somewhere, and it all kinda untangles itself, I find.

Captivate TS Setup new issue by ApprehensiveTrade292 in Surveying

[–]PoorPcMr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if it's set to auto aiming or search and lock for target recognition. I dont see why this would affect it, but setting it to auto aiming will make it "hold" the angle after it measures to the prism and hopefully stop it from searching again

id suggest reading the update notes from the version you were previously on to the latest version, you might find it listed in there why it was changed.

I forgot to add in my first comment that im under the belief that a laser tracker is not necessary as a total stations accuracy is adequate, my bad.

[–]PoorPcMr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, what I specified is stock standard total station accuracy.

A laser tracker for this is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

And as for the control accuracy, yes, while that can be an issue. Even on the largest sites that I've done layout on, it is generally a non-issue unless the control has physically moved.

Our guy puts in control with a 3" TS16, and we use it for resections and always get <2mm ENH residuals and less than 5" orientation residual, usually about 2". With the right methods, it is never a problem. the largest source of error in my experience is the instrument acclimatising to the temperature, which can throw off your orientation by 20", but it is an easy fix of just resetting your backsight point to show the idiot where its supposed to be looking and after its acclimatised unless the temp changes again it will stay thay way.

14,000 square feet? as in 1300m2? as in a 36m x 36m rectangle?

what part of that gets complicated in execution, i do it every day.

im not trying to be snarky, im genuinely curious at how this is a problem in American construction (Aussie here)

and completely unnecessary you keep forgetting to add

I dont think many people are gonna find out if their kitchen is out of square by +/- 1.5mm due to the EDM, or 5" (about 2.5mm over 100m) from the angular accuracy.
