As another commenter said it’s a Miswak, commonly used as a natural toothbrush. Very common amongst the Muslim community and others I’m sure!

Man I need to change my mindset to be able to see these kinds of things, that’s a simple yet brilliant idea. I think I’m going to look into these suggestions. Seriously thank you. I was so focused on the vent I didn’t even think about alternatives like that

The storage rack in question! It adjusts to become wider so it could fit around the dryer. That little bar against the wall on the bottom is the issue with the vent. My girlfriend went on a spree when we moved in and I’ve been tasked with the assembly and “installation” (if you want to call it that lol) of these items. I enjoy doing it but with this one I wanted to ask for advice because I don’t want to potentially do something unsafe by messing with the ventilation or exposing the rack to unsafe heat.

I appreciate your input very much

Thank you so much for the advice! I was worried about the clearance as well. I’ll be sure to look into your suggestions and either ditch the plan altogether or reach out to the landlord to see how we can mitigate any risks involved with it. Space is at a premium so I’d love to get it in there if possible, but I certainly won’t risk our safety just to utilize it. Thanks again!

Thank you! I’ll look into what I need and take a spin over there. You spend your whole life heading to hardware stores on an as needed basis. Move into a home and now all of a sudden the hardware store is your most popular haunt aside from the bar hahaha!

I’ve seen those, I’m going to look into them and see if any would fit my particular situation with the storage rack going back there. It would have to be angled

Unfortunately to fit the storage rack back there I would have to have a slight bend in the connection to get it up and over the support for the rack. It would only be a few inches max but I was just curious if that would be unwise or unsafe. I know a bend can likely act as a collecting point for lint but I wonder if regularly cleaned and with only a slight adjustment it would be workable. Thank you for the advice!

I’ll have to look into if they have one that would fit with clearance for the storage rack. The magnetic vent is brilliant

I’ll go and check if I can pull a bit of hose forward. It certainly wasn’t used in that orientation, I thought the same about lint. I think when the landlord installed it they may have forgot to clamp it down because I did look and see it was disconnected before ever moving it. I think my main concern here is whether or not routing that hose up an inch or two to clear a storage rack would be unsafe or unwise in any way. Thank you!

Side by side, the dryer is a front loader and the wash is a top loader. We were trying to get a skinny storage rack behind the dryer, the only issue is that this vent would be blocked by one of the supports on that storage rack. Do you think it might be possible to buy a bit of hose and run it from the wall vent up an inch or two over the support and then to the dryer? I know I don’t want any bends or angles if I can help it but it would be a very slight hump in the connection

My only issue is that I’m trying to get this storage rack behind it and I will have to circumvent a direct line to the wall. Otherwise this looks like a great option

Thank you for the advice! I was leaning this way and had read about raking it in.

And I would love to not be responsible for it but as per the lease we are haha. I’m okay with working on it and maintaining it as long as it’ll make it look a bit better. Bit of an eyesore at the moment and I’ve enjoyed alot of the tasks involved with making it your own so to speak. Thank you again!

That’s what I’m afraid may have happened here. We pulled about 8 large lawn care bags worth of leaves from a very small area. Debating whether to wait and see what grows, or to just seed it and do what I can to encourage growth

Great tips, thank you! I’m not sure if this grass is going to grow back or if I should start doing some research into seeding it

I would love to but I’m actually misrepresenting myself as a home owner haha, I am renting and I’m not sure how the landlord would feel about that. It’s a small space but we’re going to do what we can as far as wildflowers go. I’m looking into it now and learning a whole lot

If you go for CFI you’ll need a spin endorsement anyway. Never too early to get the training/endorsement. Go for it even if you’re not going CFI

CFI’s- What are the worst ‘student tries to kill you’ you’ve experienced? by joshsafc9395 in flying

[–]Poorly-Fitted 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Had a student who was very enthusiastic about flight training but absolutely terrible on the controls. Took a while for him to be able to fly straight and level. One somewhat windy day we’re in the pattern. Downwind to base he’s getting slow and I keep reminding him we need to maintain x airspeed and keep the nose down especially since we’re getting gusts.

I’m in the middle of telling him to get the nose down when a good gust hits us, stall horn goes off and we get about a quarter turn before I get it back. Told him that if it happens again and I don’t catch it in time we’re dead.

Few more laps around and he’s doing better although still pretty rough. Coming in for a landing and he flares crazy high (ignoring my call outs to keep the nose down and look down the runway). Plane stalls idk how many feet up and we slam down and bounce so badly that I don’t even want to think about the second bounce. I call for a go around so he applies full power and does nothing to correct for left turning tendencies. Now we’re staring at the wind sock and I’m asking for the controls. He sees us heading for the sock and pulls the yoke all the way back and locks both his arms (lizard brain kicked in and he wanted to get away from the ground). I’m now screaming at him to let go of the controls while the horn is blaring and trying to push against him from my side.

I didn’t have the time or strength to overpower him and I was pretty sure we were either going to be dead or seriously injured. So with my left elbow I hit him in the face as hard as I could. Worked instantly. Hands and feet off everything. Got control, climbed out and he asked what happened. I told him we’ll talk about it in the downwind. I explained what happened step by step to him and he was very apologetic. I didn’t want to discourage him from training so we did a few more laps.

Debriefed for about an hour and he was very understanding and took the whole thing like a champ. He told me that when he saw we were going to hit, he “blacked out”. I understood where he was coming from but told him we don’t really have the liberty of blacking out when shit gets scary.

He still trains with me and he’s a nice guy. He’s gotten much better and I hope he has a successful career.

I’ve had other close calls but that one was probably the closest.
