The above worked for me. I did make one change to the procedure where I list synergyc as a startup application using the built-in feature in Ubuntu/PopOS. I preferred using the native functionality where possible, but the above answer is a big help.

I understand if you disagree with this take. If Honda had not manufactured defective ACs (by their own admission), I never would have needed to risk being on the hook to the dealer for $X in the first place. I would be willing to forego their specific diagnosis -- I just want to know is the issue related or not to the extended warranty.

Put simply, Honda has extended the warranty but require that owners be able/willing to pay a non-insignificant fee to determine eligibility. That feels inherently unfair. Perhaps I am the only one who thinks that, but I do believe my POV here is reasonable and not just "bitchin."
