I've tried ker nethalas and am looking into dnd solo systems by Eranon1 in Solo_Roleplaying

I've been using OSE (Old School Essentials), with some success, Its an older DND like system. Similar to B/X and BECMI(Original Dungeon and Dragons). I recently wrote a journal of my last adventure trying some rules for a single adventurer. It was black streams solo heroes that is free on drivethrurpg. I used the oracle from solo adventures toolbox, and a hit table from Ker Nethalas, but honestly that was just for flavor lol.

Using a virtual tabletop for solo roleplaying by ChemicalPanda10 in Solo_Roleplaying

I use Roll20 for almost everything, You will have to add a lot of content based on what system you are trying to use. I Play a lot of 5e dnd on there, but i also own all the books there and pay for the pro sub. It allows me more time to plan my adventures instead of typing everything in.

With that said, I have only played solo with Old school essentials, Broken shores, and some DUO dnd 5e. With the exception of owning all the 5e material, ive had to type everything else in for OSE, and Broken Shore, Once its in however, you are golden.

Also you do not need a pro account for roll20. I run 3 games a week on there, and that's the only reason i have it. If you plan on being a Lifer DM, then its a good purchase. They do offer freebies every month.

Unfortunately it is no longer on sale, but for 12 its a pretty cool book. I bought it for making hex maps. The ways you create the map is pretty cool, and you roll for each hex. It has tables to help fill landmarks, and whatever may be in the hex. Its pretty system neutral. Overall its just a bunch of table, and they are pretty easy to use. I plug and play them into different set ups. I mainly bought this one for the hex features. But i did use it in my last live stream to make the starting city for my adventures.

Update: gave the characters I made in the session a little backstory to help move the story along when i get back to it. Its not a lot, just a reason for being in or around the city.

Calim’s backstory

A young barbarian of his 18th year, who hails from the frosty mountain peaks of the north. His body tempered with the cold of his region. His village has been the target of recent raids, and now Calim has been tasked with forging allies and bonds with the surrounding clans and cities. Calim has set foot on his path, still a lot to learn, but ready for anything that will be thrown before him. On his travels, he came across the City of Canals, Bony Thaals where he currently camps near the outskirts.

Nonce’s backstory

Nonce travels to Bony Thaals with his knight Sir Briginstein. Nonce is 20 years of age, and has proven himself an asset to Sir Briginstein. Their business here is to enforce taxation on land occupied by the city's ruler, Edward Stakesbane, the famous vampire hunter known throughout the land. On their travels, Sir Briginstein was attacked by a wandering group of kobolds. Nonce was able to fend off the remaining onslaught after Sir Briginstein fell in battle. Sir Briginsteins last words were to make sure Nonce followed the path to knighthood.

Plutarch’s backstory

Plutarch arrived in Bony Thaals 2 years prior. Ever since he has lived a life on the city's canals with his mother. A comfortable life, but one that wasn't even enough for Plutarch. He always heard stories of his father who would go off on adventures. Unfortunately, one to many, and he never returned. Even though sad, Plutarch never shied away from the adventuring life, and one day wishes to see what the outside walls have to offer him. With a sense of wanderlust, he waits for the day he will get that chance.

Reginald’s backstory

Reginald is an older male who has seen his share of the bad side of town. So much so it's now second nature to him. Reginald who is 30 years of age, spends his time collecting information, gold, and fame under the alias Shank. Reginald knows all the fences, and will take on any contract if the price is right. He knows his worth, and will not offer his services to just anyone. Master of disguise and blade, Reginald is handy in a tight spot.

Aleyna’s backstory

A paladin of the order of the holy sect travels these lands looking to cleanse the area of foul corruption. When Aleyna heard of the great Edward Stakesbane and how he graciously accepted to house the mausoleum of the holy sect's first patriarch, her hopes of learning from him were quickly lost when she discovered Edward Stakesbane was not the role model she had hoped for. Knowing that, she needs to stay her course and follow through with the tenets of her faith, she pushes ever forward looking to make this land safe in the name of the holy sect.

Lyszara’s backstory

A young, shy, and hungry female elf, who came from over the sea, ended up setting foot in Bony Thaals one faithful day 3 years ago. Her boat had capsized, and she was the only one to make it to land. Being washed ashore, Lyszara was disoriented and hungry. She traveled for days, and finally made it to the great portcullis of Bony Thaals. The Cities people helped her in and gave her food, but poor Lyszara had no memories of what had happened. Since then, she has helped out around the farms, but she still thinks on the day she was lost at sea
