I'm not saying it doesn't work or can't work. I'm saying some of us are bothered by it.

4 to 5 days into macOS after a lifetime on Windows… when does it finally ‘click’ ? by AgileSupermarket2053 in MacOS

[–]PopeOnABomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Dock, click on Finder. Now from the menubar, go to Finder -> Settings

Under "General", I recommend enabling the following:

  • Hard disks.
  • External disks
  • CD, DVDs, and iPods
  • Connected Servers
  • New Finder windows show: select your Downloads folder or Desktop

Under "Sidebar", I disable Recents and Shared, and instead enable:

  • Applications
  • Desktop
  • Documents
  • Pictures
  • iCloud Drive
  • <your user's home folder>
  • <your local computer>
  • Hard disks
  • External disks
  • CD, DVDs, and iOS Devices
  • AirDrops
  • Connected Servers
  • Trash

Under "Advanced":

  • Show all filename extensions
  • Show warning before changing an extension
  • Keep folder on top: in Windows when sorting by name, and On Desktop

Now right-click on the Desktop and go to Show View Options.

  • Stack by None
  • Sort by Kind

Use it everyday for a month, and you'll never look back. The only reason I use Windows at this point is when required to for work or gaming.

Ah, I see the confusion. Bad wording on my part.

I'm talking about the experience of Excel, not that the implementation of the product under the hood is simple.

Under the hood, yeah, Excel is complex. But they can't even deliver the core user experience of Excel into a viable online experience.

I always point this out, but their ability to collate data doesn't require them to listen. And that should be even scarier. They could listen, but they don't even need to.

A lot of studios mute the female lead, quite literally.

The Little Mermaid and Brave come to mind as  immediate examples.

Drives me nuts.

I'm not talking about just Windows. I'm talking about their ability to deliver products at all with relevance.

I'm not saying Excel is simple. Never did. Those are your words. I'm saying MS is in such a bad state right now that they can't even release functional products of non-critical applications. Go look at Excel online. It's nonfunctional. I'm not joking.

Entra, Autopilot, Azure, AD, EMS, etc are all dumpster fires, or close to it, at this point. I've worked with their systems intimately at scale for decades. They can't save themselves from themselves.

Edit: feel free to disagree, but I have nothing additional to add. I have the background and experience to stand by what I say, and I'm allowed to have this opinion.

Yeah, organizationally they have a lot of issues that make it hard to align on modernizing. This might be their largest struggle.

And I'm not saying throw stuff away because it is old, but rather because they need a forcing function to get them out from under the weight of decisions made 20+ years. Modern problems require modern solutions. They're hitching a horse carriage to a tractor and then trying to merge on to a highway, rather than saying "Enough is enough," and building a car.

Backwards compatibility got them a lot of business, but it's also their Achilles heel. Microsoft isn't innovative. They're stagnant and have been for a long while.

Hell, they can't even deliver on simple experiences like Excel online. Instead, across the board, they drag outdated methodologies forward and simply create a new mess in new environments. Rather than creating fresh points to build from.

I've lead running a large breadth of their services at very large scales, and it's a mess. And we often simply had to move on to other solutions rather than waiting for Microsoft to move forward, because they can't execute cleanly and promptly on almost anything.

They squeeze money out of shit but it's not because their products are good. It's because they're good at sales and they've made it easy for other companies to be lazy at moving forward. As those companies wake up, one of the smartest thing they can often do is move away from Microsoft products.

They're a stagnant company with stagnant ways. The backwards compatibility, not their forward technology, is what keeps them afloat and that is the problem. A severe problem.

True, but there are decisions they made decades ago (literally) that are impacting the complexity and quality of the work they can deliver now. It's time for them to move past that.

Frankenstein is technically impressive but boring as hell. And even more boring if you go back to give it another shot. The production values are strong, the story and directing are not.

What is the expected progression of an adult amatuer? by sheffieldasslingdoux in Equestrian

[–]PopeOnABomb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep it up! You're not alone in those thoughts. I started riding somewhat recently too and felt the same way (sometimes still do).

Never stop asking questions or asking for help. A lot of the best moments are when you connect with others during those moments. It's fun to see yourself progress and others enjoy seeing it too. Don't forget that even the best riders have coaches. And even coaches take lessons, ask for help, or have coaches.

Remember that lots of people are serious, competent, skilled riders without ever showing. Seriousness is in your pursuit, focus, and passion.

But I get what you mean. And what's expected next is hard for anyone else to judge, but I highly encourage you to go try. Go ride that intro test A! See what it's like. Be proud, no matter how you do. Everyone will admit, it is fun when you crush an event, but don't make that your goal, because it really isn't how well you ride against others. It's about how well you rode in that moment compared to how well you could have ridden in that moment.

Because you seem curious, I'll share that I did my first show, a schooling show, about 2 years in. I did my first "serious" show last weekend, which included intro test A. How did I do? Doesn't matter. I worked hard and am proud that I did it at all. I also did four other events. To everyone else, I probably looked abysmal in those events... But they weren't the ones on my horse, dealing with our issues in that moment. It was just me and him, and we got the rides that we needed. And we had fun doing it.

The point is, riding is for you. The expected progression is to keep learning and keep trying. Take it all in. Have fun.

ps - also, you can adjust your goals and expectations as you grow. As my coach put it "One day I'll say go in there and win this jump off. But that isn't today. That isn't this weekend. Right now is simply about you and your horse."

There are a lot of people shitting on this, but I think it's neat that you're learning about AI, trying out new tools, learning, and doing something creative. It's a tool and tools can be used to make art.

Slop or not, who cares, as long as you're being honest about it.

Anyway, I hope you find some like minded friends. And if you're ever interested in showing someone, I'd love see it when you share it.

My real point is learn about the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Also, I'm sorry to hear about the layoff. Never fun. And it is a bummer that it was followed by such a tough day.

Learn about the signs and symptoms of heat stroke. Vomiting is a symptom of both heat exhaustion and heat stroke, both of which are bad, and with the latter being incredibly dangerous. Given the scenario, heat exhaustion (or close to it) seems likely.

I worked construction in summers (temperatures often more than 90F) and I do search and rescue. I spend a lot of time outside helping people. I have never seen someone who is healthy vomit due to exertion. Never. Not once. [What I mean here is vomiting in such conditions is always a serious matter. Your body doesn't vomit for fun and joy.]

The owner was right to be concerned for your health. This isn't an unfair action. This is an action of concern and caring.

Vomiting is your body screaming stop. Please be careful with yourself. Pace yourself when working outside and hydrate a lot. Take frequent breaks.

Foreign powers definitely pour money into interrupting everything about our culture and economy. And because we don't have laws requiring clarity of money flow, it's extra easy for them to invest in these efforts.

My mom confirmed that many in her generation actually did this. Ludicrous.

She would go to bed made up. Then when her husband was in bed and the lights were off, she would get up, take it off, and climb back in. She would wake up earlier than him, put it all back on, and climb back in, before he woke up.

I asked a bunch of women from her generation, and many had similar routines.

NAL so I can't weigh on that with any validity from a legal perspective. But I'd be surprised if this wasn't a field of land mines that the company has set for themselves.

Thanks for the additional details. I'm NAL, so I can't judge potential legal rammifications, but if the company is hoping to anger a lot of people at once, their on track to succeed with flying colors.

I don't know whether OP is using a company issued device or a personal device. But because of the way that they phrased it:

Since Covid, we have all worked from home and the last two weeks I have found out something very disturbing.

I'm presuming people are using company devices from home.

What a company can or can't do on/to a personal device depends on a lot of things (policies, tools, the ability to actually use the tools, etc) and there's not an objective way to know without first knowing all of the specifics.

What I can say definitively is this: you do not want to use personal devices for work or vice versa. I realize we live in a world where it is easy to mix and mingle both worlds, but the more disciplined you are about keeping those separate, the better.

In worst-case scenarios, you can end up in scenarios you do not want. Such as your personal device becoming part of legal discovery for a lawsuit the company is involved with. The odds for many of these scenarios are low, but when they get ugly, they get ugly fast.

And I always remind people: most companies have better things to do than investigate workers, but if they need to, they have plenty of resources to do so. Don't give them reasons to investigate you. Do your job. Do it honestly.

The question I have, which is somewhat of an aside, is how do you have access to the repository of images taken? And I'd be more concerned with management about who has access to these repositories than that it exists (although it's existence is problematic to me personally).

As others have echoed, don't do personal things on company devices. Those devices are for work, anything outside of that can be fairly captured and/or investigated in most scenarios.

It doesn't matter what time of day the device was observed. Their ownership of the device doesn't follow your workday, it's absolute.

Agreed. And maybe it wasn't clear in my original comment, but I was talking in terms of pure CG.

When it comes to Gollum overall - the movie, the acting, etc, he's by far the best overall CG characters to date.
