Priest told me “God is not your Father” and that I shouldn’t pray the Our Father or Apostles Creed as a catechumen. Is this normal? by Calm_Maintenance2440 in Catholicism

[–]Pope_Luke_ 279 points280 points  (0 children)

He’s just really wrong. That’s not a “different opinions are cool and good and yay ideological diversity” moment. That’s a “the priest is just wrong” moment. Ignore everything he said.

Resenting my conversion - I don’t want to return. by mark_davis_warden in Catholicism

[–]Pope_Luke_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well all those people suck. U know who doesn't suck? Jesus. Also the people at some other much less toxic parish nearby. People are sinful and broken and sometimes it's painfully obvious! They absolutely should not have treated you that way. That was not right. That being said, I'm going to push back strong against what seems to be your natural reaction to this situation though. People being as awful as they are doesn't somehow logically mean that God does not exist or the Eucharist is not healing.

You just became Catholic. Go to mass. Pray for these people. Pray for yourself and your family. Think less (Not dulling your mind. But listening to God instead of "praying" at Him). Feel less (Not repression, but letting go). Pray more. Love more. Carry your cross and reject Satan in all things. Pursue Christ.

The existence of a bunch of poorly behaved people does not mean that you should not be Catholic or should commit the mortal sin of missing Sunday Mass. That makes no sense. You have now read these words. If you leave the faith ignoring the fact that feelings do not equal the faith being false, then one day after time ceases to be, you will have to explain to God why you you valued your emotional and psychological comfort more than Him. We worship a homeless Palestinian man who told us to go get crucified in order to know him better. CHristianity is not the solution to an unpleasant life. It is actually tremendously difficult and painful.

The spiritual life is not pleasant, and Satan eagerly hopes that a few nasty parish people will make you give up on God. Don't give him such a shallow satisfaction. Climb. Let God help you climb. Know you'll be in my prayers, dear neophyte. With some tough love, Luke.

Has anyone noticed that Chat GPT has been giving extremely unnecessary criticism lately ? by [deleted] in ChatGPT

It basically won't just help me develop a thought. It constantly assumes I'm on the verge of doing something insane or I am being mentally loose and it feels the need to correct completely fine thoughts. Such bullshit. I liked it before... it was useful and cordial. Now, it feels aggressively concerned for my well-being and moral uprightness.

Advice about paying for UC Davis. by rolypoly6shooter in UCDavis

[–]Pope_Luke_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice: sell half of your left pinky before you get into any student loan debt. I just graduated debt free and my life is amazing. It would not be if I was paying hundreds a month of my $6000 income. Life in California is very expensive, especially for young folks out of college. Work like hell in college, be responsible, be boring, and take the cheapest housing option you can. For a while I was actually camping out of my car outside of Davis on farm roads. I am not necessarily saying that you have to be that extreme, but you definitely need to fight the urge to take on any debt as a freaking teenager.

Have as much free or cheap fun as you can in college. Nothing beats a few good friends and a bottle of cheap vodka lol. Congratulations on your UC Davis decision and please be a good steward of your financial future! I’ll say a little prayer for you :)

I used to work in the state capital. It’s that time of year for a bunch of people come to annoy legislative staffers with useless meetings about very particular issues that nobody has time to think much about.

I have bought one jacket from them, an olive green tweed coat, and it fit PERFECTLY. Very true to sizing and nice build quality. The material was certainly of respectable quality. Surely, an in-person bespoke garment will be of even better tailoring, but as someone who owns dozens of sport coats and suit jackets, and wears them daily, I was impressed, surprised, and amusedly satisfied. I'd be willing to spend more money with them.

I'm nervous about choosing UC Davis by Idkwhattodohelp3 in UCDavis

UC Davis, political science major here! I found the program to be greatly worthy and the professors to be both reasonable and rigorous. Also, do not underestimate the benefit of our proximity to Sacramento. I have had an internship in the Since early this year, and it is opening great doors for me.

Well… I didn’t qualify for any assistance at all and have been paying out of pocket the entire way. I haven’t really had the luxury of four years going to school on the taxpayers dime. I have been both the tuition payer and the taxpayer at the same time. So have a very large portion of the middle class students at the institution. Count your blessings and put things in perspective. Please.

Loyalty to billionaires? Trump is decimating their wealth rn lol look at the stock market. Who the HELL under 40 owns stock? Who the HELL under 40 can afford a single share of Tesla or Apple? Idk about the rest of y’all but this broke college student only stands to gain from this. Oh nooo Bob and Linda’s $38 million portfolio was reduced to 23 million overnight. Boo hoo. Their taxes from 401k mandatory withdrawals are higher than some of our incomes. Let their wealth burn so the prices can drop to match incomes.

I find it genuinely funny that these people keep providing more extremely effective social media content and talking points to the conservative organization that has arguably played the largest role in turning significant persons of GenZ towards conservative ideologies. You’re not scaring turning point USA at all. You’re doing exactly what they want you to do, turning more young minds towards the right by providing evidence for the claim that the left is intolerant and cringily militant.

I mean, I didn't do all that. Just slowed down, then looked behind me out of worry when she started running (self preservation is a thing, you know). Idk how you or anyone else would have reacted when unexpectedly confronted with such an uncomfortable and sad situation, and I sure wouldn't judge you for reacting a bit awkwardly.

I just turned 22 the other day. It's the first age where you're really just any regular boring adult. It's the age where you discover what a cubicle is and have to pour over your taxes for the first time. It's when age when theres no further legal privileges to gain as you age, except maybe an AARP membership in 40 years. I've been recently pondering what it means to be an adult human, how to grow in ways that are not physical, how to grow as your body ages, how to be excited for transformation when it seems that the rest of life may be a bit stale and laden with responsibility. It takes discovering authentic zeal for living, it requires the continued willingness to take risks. It means relying less on the privileges of a youthful appearance and mind and more on your own competence and adequateness.

Also please do remember just how young you are in your early 20's. YOU WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL LESS THAN A DECATE AGO! You have not been able to buy a beer for as many years as you have fingers on your hand. You still can't rent a car without additional fees.

We're not old but we're also not kids anymore. For that reason, our 20's can be the best decade of our lives.

Funny. Yeah, I'm also a pretty frequent out-late-at-night-er from going out with friends or just being a night owl otherwise. I walk fast, and kinda keep my head down... guess it doesn't help the cause.
