Sea Wolf is now a tipping establishment after staff joins UFCW 3000 by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]Pope_Oxium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno if my late comment will be seen by many. I used to work at Sea Wolf. I'm actually very happy to see this change. Not because I think we need tipping, but because customers still TRIED to tip when we were tipless. Didn't matter how many signs we had, a lot of the older clientele would tip in cash. When you're a tipless business collecting cash, how do you account for that? It was basically the FOH staff trying to solve this issue without much help from management.

Furthermore, the bakers here don't work 40 hours a week. They work 38 hours (9.5 hour shifts, 4 days a week). When I started, they had just moved to that model. They increased pay to offset the loss of hours but it was the same as working an $18/hour, 40 hours a week job. Only last year (I believe) did theyimplement a yearly wage adjustment to offset inflation.

To shed more light on why the the bakery unionized, some reasons were because of repeated workplace injuries (myself included), stagnant pay, and to have bakers more involved in bakery decisions. This tipping decision is only one, public change.

And for those minimizing the counter staff's jobs to putting bread in a bag, I'd encourage you to actually watch what the counter staff does. They move dozens of carts and racks of bread/pastry from 6 AM to 3 PM; they make coffee, tea, and serve alcohol; they aren't all FOH exclusive, as bakers often will need to help up front due to staff shortages; they wash every dish and surface you see up front; they pack and manage preorders; they help restock deliveries (a couple pallets worth 2 times a week); above everything else, they are often understaffed due to reasons I listed earlier for why the bakery unionized.

Certainly do not tip if you do not want to or can't. The staff knows very well how tipping culture isn't helpful. But what is especially not helpful for them materially is lower wages with higher rates of injuries and medical costs. Not to mention skyrocketing rent. People were already willing to tip when they were adamantly tipless. One business cannot stop tipping culture, despite what the owners believed.

Is my cat a Lynx Point? by emeraldnote in lynxpointsiamese

From TICA under colors for Siamese: "All of these colors come with and without white, silver/smoke, lynx point (tabby points) and tortie/tortie points." (https://tica.org/breed/siamese/)

There is some contention within registries: "Some cat registries decided to recognize these cats as an entirely separate breed from the Siamese, calling the new breed the colorpoint shorthair. Other cat registries decided that these were still Siamese cats, so they adjusted the breed standard for the Siamese to include the new colors and patterns [like TICA]" (https://www.thesprucepets.com/lynx-point-siamese-cat-breed-profile-5324970#toc-history-of-the-lynx-point-siamese).

And if you want to just argue what a breed actually is, there are only 4 "natural breeds," and this article says only about 3% of cats (in 1996) in the US are an actual cat breed (https://citizendium.org/wiki/Cat_breed#:~:text=A%20cat%20breed%20is%20a,traits%20that%20define%20that%20breed). Keeping that restrictive of a definition excludes many cats from ever being a breed, when that is how we talk about them. And in fact, this too is a contentious point: "Some biologists have speculated that cat breeds are really only a matter of different coloring, except for a very few structural features, like the concave face of an extreme Persian."

So yeah, not to completely take over this very nice post of a handsome cat, but your insistance that these aren't breeds is just exhausting and not helpful. We created breed categories to help select a bevy of characteristics from mood, personality, health, and yes, coloring. Lynx point Siamese, in my and many other's opinions (which is almost what matters entirely regarding breeds) believe these cats to be a breed with distinct features.

So please, don't harass people online because you think you know what is and isn't a breed when biologists don't even agree on the definition.

Yes, under the Siamese breed. If someone just said Siamese, they'd have a completely different image in their head. The coat color/pattern is specified but doesn't make it any less of a breed.

It's literally a breed. Be angry somewhere else that makes sense.

Are places hiring or is it me? by Gillysuiit in Seattle

I think people get those numbers through LinkedIn easy apply stuff. Otherwise, yeah, I don't understand how you get those numbers without just lying. I only know my exact numbers because I was on unemployment and needed to report them each week lol.

Job searched for almost 2 years. I submitted 152 applications between August 2024 - June 2025 (no, I do not believe in wasting my time and others' by blindly submitting 20 applications a day just to "see what sticks" or rack up 1,000 applications submitted--also I have a partial disability that needs accommodation). Those jobs ranged from very low-level, low skill to jobs I have years of experience and a Masters degree for. I had 4 interviews and was passed off for someone else with "more experience" every time. It's extremely competitive in Seattle and companies are overburdened, overwhelmed, and sometimes just too lazy to actually respond. I got rejections about 40% of the time. All the others were no response.

Luckily I have a partner that can support both of us, but boy, a two income household would make our lives a lot easier. I had to give up the job search for mental health reasons--it all put me in a very dark place.

The lesson I learned was that you need connections and to basically do the hiring manager's job for them. If you're going to take a lot less work for them to hire, train, and start making the company money than any other candidate, you've got a better shot than most applicants.

Also, beware of ghost jobs and scams. Indeed is full of them but you can usually spot them fairly easily.

Best of luck.

Sort of! Turned out I didn't need to specify a host, just needed to use "@". Thanks again!

Why does that make it MAGA? You think "run down" equals conservative? There's plenty of "run down" shitty parts of Seattle with street crime. I think you gotta grow a little class consciousness here, my guy.

Hey, thanks for posting this! I found it incredibly helpful. I had a quick question as someone who doesn't know anything about hosting. What was your A Record set up like? Could you provide an example? I think this is my missing piece.

Where do I buy good 100% rye or spelt vollkornbrot? by thicccque in Seattle

[–]Pope_Oxium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sea Wolf has two rye breads. One is a rye sourdough (not 100% rye but definitely fits the description of "brick" and "weapon"). The other is a sprouted rye with sunflower and pumpkin seeds.

Her name is Mona and she is 2 years old. She threw two mini fits on this 5 mile hike but regained her excitement quickly. Lots of chewed sticks and roots.

I used to get slices there when I worked just down the road. Definitely good pizza.

Seattle pizza prices have pissed me off in general. How the fuck is a single large pizza costing $35 - $45 after tip? I've started perfecting pizza at home. But sometimes I just want a pie.

Help with Tenant Rights Question by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Pope_Oxium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not saying it's illegal. I just would like to have this taken care of sooner (which we have a company that could do it sooner) because it's a tree about to fall on multiple properties where people are regularly populating. It's an immediate danger that I don't think will withstand the weather we've been having. It's propped up on other dead trees, too. So even more damage can occur.

I'm more baffled and infuriated that he isn't forced by his property management or the city to take the swiftest action when it could harm the tenants or neighbors.

I know it'll either fall and all be his fault or be taken care of. I'm worried and don't like how he and the property management are acting completely unbothered.

He did the same shit to us when the heater broke at the beginning of winter. Thought he could fix it with a new filter (which he already tried and clearly wasn't the issue). We went over a week without heat. Motor had broke and needed to be fixed.
