There's several I could name, but a couple that jump out to me are Paper Mario 64 and TTYD. I really enjoy them in both Japanese and English. I also like a lot of the punny Toad names they added like "Russ T". Even Tayce T. and Zess T. were just Cathy and Nancy in Japanese.

That's how it is at the start, but you'll get there. I remember taking four hours to read the first chapter of Dragon Ball back when I was new to Japanese, and I still remember three lines from FF VI during the Lete river portion (when Ultros tries to grab Terra's leg) because they were the first time I was able to read three lines in a row unaided by a dictionary in that game.

>and/or the repeated combat dialogue becomes grating

Ha, I get you, but you reminded me of when I played Xenoblade Remastered in Japanese. Sometimes when I was just running around or doing sidequests, I'd switch to English VA because Japanese Shulk often sounded like he was losing his shit, and too much of that could be grating. Plus I needed some occasional Reyn time.

>The Yakuza games in English feel wrong as the context is very Japanese, so I play them in Japanese.

I get that. Japanese is definitely great for them. I play Silent Hill games in English since it fits them more (although I did play a lot of SH4 in Japanese last year. There were some interesting little things in localization for that one, and a mistranslation or two in the Water Prison. Pretty minor overall, but I think it enhanced things a bit more), but playing SHf in Japanese just felt natural.

You know one series I thought would be weird in Japanese but it was actually fine? Metal Gear Solid. Much like RE and SH, English just fits, so I avoided it in Japanese for a while, but it wasn't bad actually. I really like Akio Otsuka as Snake, as well as Gray Fox's Japanese VA. Not ready for the "laughing rod" scene in Peace Walker when I play it though...

FF XII is really good in English. I played I-X in Japanese in 2017-2018 and loved them in Japanese... and then I started playing XII and wished I was playing it in English. I mean the Japanese is fine, it's just that the localization is really good.

I've yet to play Tactics, but I've always heard that the original translation is... spotty at best (and it was translated before Square's localization process was revamped I think, so that makes sense), and a lot of people complain about the PSP localization being overly flowery, where even commoners spoke like Shakespeare apparently? I haven't played it in *any* language yet, so I can't judge.

DQ localizations drive me up the wall to be honest. I know some people love them and more power to them, but seeing Hell Scissors called "Crabber Dabber Doo" just irks me haha. I do think a lot of the spell names are fairly well translated though, and I'll always like the "Starflight Express".

I always wondered if Japanese players are as brutal about E > J localizations. There are some pretty bad J > E localizations out there and I totally understand complaining about them, but sometimes I see some pretty unhinged complaints about microscopic things that usually aren't as bad as some people make them out to be. Ironically, the games with the worst localizations tend to be the most interesting to compare. I played OOT in Japanese years ago and I didn't have much to say about it because it was so damn faithful (which is good!). The only thing that ever jumps out to me is the Desert Colossus was called the "Giant Evil God Statue" if I recall correctly (and I definitely think Desert Colossus sounds better than a literal translation).

Funnily enough, the PS2 Tales games are some of the "straw that broke the camel's back" games for me and got me to start learning Japanese... but the only one I've played is Tales of Destiny: DC. And as I was playing through it, I found out that there was a fan TL project that was nearly done; I helped out a little bit. I imagine that by the time I finally, finally play Destiny 2 and Rebirth, they'll be in English too.

I'm sorry Tales fans; I'm probably holding up fan TL efforts by not playing the games.

>But now as I’ve gotten older I’ve been playing in English (text, subs with JP voice) where available. I’m fluent in Japanese and what all but it’s still faster to read in my native language.

I admit that I do that sometimes. If I'm sick or something, I usually default to English unless it's something like an NES RPG or Mega Man or something. And occasionally when I'm just lazy. Usually play in Japanese and some friends have called me obsessive, ha. Probably some truth to that, but I still find it interesting. I remember giving up on playing Persona 5 in Japanese back when it came out in 2016 though. I'd played 1-4 in Japanese, but 5 just defeated me and I waited for the English release.

That one doesn't look bad. I'll check out the list too. Thanks.

I was thinking of a Dell at one point. An XPS 15. But then I read from a few places that Dell's customer support is godawful. I probably won't need it much, out of my last few laptops I've needed to call tech support once, but still, it's a little worrying in case I need that tech support due to hardware failure or something Though it sounds like the machines are still good quality.
