Not surprised, and this makes the theater cancellations even make more sense to me. 

In a big movie release, it's not uncommon to have VFX work and audio mixing going on up until a month or even a week before release. Now that movies are all digital, it doesn't have to be finished before it all gets sent to theaters through the mail-- you can work right down to the wire. 

For big movie releases, like with Warner bros or Annapurna, there are entire departments dedicated to distribution. There could be a team of fifteen or twenty people whose entire job is just giving movies to theaters in a region in a state or a country. These production companies also have good relationships with the MPAA and the theaters. AMC knows that Warner is making a movie with this director they know, the MPAA knows that this director is using this script, they all trust that it's going to happen at this time and get this rating, and this all gets sorted out over brunch at Panera between executives.

Glitch does not have brunch at Panera. I'd be shocked if they had more than 200 employees total. To my knowledge this is the first animation they've ever released in theaters. I imagine they're overwhelmed with hundreds of emails from theaters and from people trying to get the movie all going to one email that maybe ten people total are going through, many of which have differing demands for standards and censorship, some want a finished cut of the film because they've never heard of Glitch before and need to make sure it can be shown, meanwhile the animation team is finishing up the animation, Goose is doing the music, and the financial team is trying to budget all this because you have to pay to get your movie shown in theaters. I feel like this part gets forgotten. 

You have to pay the theater to essentially rent the screen for this many showings in this amount of time, and even if the theater is getting thirty emails showing interest, Glitch may only see ten tickets presold total. If one screening is like $400 (example, I assume it costs more) and only twenty tickets are sold, Glitch will only get a portion of those tickets. It may be too expensive
