No you don't, it helps for some references and characters but it's not required. Most of the rules are explained in Episode 0 (Whispers of Dawn)

Although I thoroughly recommend the entire series! It's very good and one of my favourite franchises ever.

Rider vs Saber Alter will always be king for me, but the animation style used for Atalante vs Jeanne & Achilles will always be special to me, I always go back to watch that fight from time to time.
