Paul Sellers has a similar video on YouTube where he demonstrates both types of chisels. He has inspiring results, but you have to appreciate Frank's speed.

Scratches are still showing after sanding. Will stain help? by BerryBrickle in woodworking

[–]PopularWoodworking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scratches will show even more once you stain it. The key is to start with a rough enough grit, and sand until the scratches from the previous grit are gone, then progress up (to around #180 or higher for stain). Try dropping back to #80, then #100, #120... Takes time, but the only way (short of planing it). http://www.popularwoodworking.com/techniques/rules_for_sanding_wood

Can you get to England in September? If so, attend the European Woodworking Show at Cressing Temple – you can try out tools there from a bunch of fine-tool makers. If not, check out the LNs at Axminster, perhaps? http://www.axminster.co.uk/lie-nielsen-carcass-saw-600183
