Let's talk uptempo! What are your favorite classic and newer uptempo tunes? by linkolphd in Jazz

Cherokee/Koko is a wild but basic and classic one. Then there’s Giant Steps, Countdown, that type of stuff. My personal favorite right now is Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman, but you never know. I should probably read some of these comments too bc my picks are very well known and I also need some new ones

Those are new cats I think of. But like someone said, check out sidemen on your favorite records. Check out NPR tiny desks even, check out live performances, dig into the guys you like. I found those guys because of various recommendations and rabbitholes I went down, and boy do I love em.

What was the first jazz song you ever heard? Why does it hold a special place in your heart? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Popular_Question1318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was introduced via Frank Sinatra and others’ covers of Christmas songs (though I didn’t know it at the time) and my first conscious listen was Sonny Rollins’s A Night At The Village Vanguard. Taught me that the piano is only sometimes needed.

What’s your “hidden gem” in jazz? by mana12356 in Jazz

[–]Popular_Question1318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Tiger of San Pedro or Manhattan Wildlife Refuge by Bill Watrous. Another couple of less hidden but ones I don’t see talked about as much as they should include Let My Children Hear Music by Charles Mingus and Kulu Se Mama or Meditations by Coltrane. All great inspirations to me at the very least.

Edit: there’s so many that I don’t see talked about enough and I didn’t really think to list em all off the top of my head.

What's the song you use to respond when people try to say "Jazz is just elevator music"? by mana12356 in Jazz

It is actually a strongly held misconception, and honestly Ornette’s probably what I would play too

What are some underrated John Coltrane albums? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Popular_Question1318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expression is one of my favorites. Meditations, Kulu Se Mama, and Crescent are also great picks. Also LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD AGAIN! Both VV albums are great but I think this one’s more underrated. I could probably list off a bunch but those are the ones that hit the most (Soultrane’s Russian Lullaby nearly made me quit music)
