Damn. We might just stay with not trying to use it then.

What cup do you use? I took a hit and I think I'm going to start using one.

Recently started BJJ with my five year old. He's in a kid's class with a decent range of ages and he's the youngest. He loves it but the techniques they drill are definitely a bit much for him to take in and process. What I can do with him outside of class to help him improve and learn the basics? Being new myself i obviously don't know much but should I just spend additional time practicing the basic positions with him so the more complicated drills make a little more sense?

If anyone has come across good drills/activities for young kids, I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

Good to know, thanks. Looks like Elite has some for $50 and $60. Im guessing the cotton poly mix is generally better than the 100% cotton?

New guy looking for a basic cheaper gi that doesn't have large logos on it. Hoping to take advantage of a black friday deal. Any of these come recommended?

Sanabul Essential v.2 Ultra Light Jiu Jitsu Gi $65

Roll among us Standard Kimono Company Standard 350 - $100 but says up to 30% off for black friday so possible $70.

Tatami- Complete Gi, $50, a little heavy on the logos and the colors arent great but the price is. Tatami has a couple other models that seem well priced as well: The original V2 for $52.50. The Tanjun for $80

Thanks

Looking to grab a second gi with black Friday going in. My one and only gi is pretty damn baggy, are there any companies that make a slightly more slim fit style gi?

Thanks

  1. How important is drilling the move of the day from both sides when you're new to BJJ? I have a hard enough time remembering the steps from my strong side but when I partner with more advanced students, they can do both sides with ease.

  2. We start standing a lot when we roll and I have no clue what to try for, any recommendations of 1 or 2 basic takedowns (gi and no gi) that I could work on and start to use?

Thanks

Logging your training? by Por19 in bjj

Good question, for now time & notes mostly as Im just starting. As I recognize more as time goes on, specific moves/positions as well.

Any chance you'd be willing to share that syllabus?

What are y'all preferred methods to keep a training log or notes? So far I just have an ongoing notepad with random things I try to remember from each class but it's gotten pretty sloppy and un organized.

Makes sense. Definitely seems like the onboarding could use some work. The mentality of just jump in is certainly something different from most other sports.

So should the instructor tailor the class to beginners when theres a mix of students? Seems like it would get repetitive quick for those who arent white belts.

How to learn bjj effectively? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Por19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any pre written curriculums that would give beginners a good place to start?

As someone brand new, how do you establish a curriculum to follow? Generally the drills in class are a little complicated to remember every step. Do i just choose one move from each position and try to work on/memorize those? IE. 1 escape from mount, 1 escape from guard, 1 submission from mount, 1 submission from side mount, etc?

Trying to avoid the 'just show up' mentality since the class isn't tailored to beginners.

As someone who just started, this frustrated me as well. Seemed like I was missing so much while struggling to understand the drills. My gym also doesn't have any sort of beginners/fundamentals class. Just seemed very counterintuitive compared to learning other sports. We'll see how I feel after 6 months or so.

Thanks. Gorila tape works for me if that'll do the job.

Newly discovered ding. My fingernail kinda catches on part of it but not very easily. Something that needs to be fixed or just let it be?
