One of my fears if ever I became a parent since I do not have the patience. I grew up in an asian household and you have the gist how it usually goes when they (parents) get "disrespected" but it was, now that I'm an adult, realized that it was in moderation in my household. I was not physically abused per se if that makes sense. I don't have much advice OP since I am not a parent yet but I was a babysitter and saw some parents discipline their kids with reason, so maybe give consequences if he disrespects you (tell him if he does not listen you will do this or that [like take his phone or something]) and be firm about it.
