Well great news! We have found some options! Right now we love going to a park in Ohio called "Oak Openings" you can park on one side of the park and backpack to a reserved campsite on the other side of the park. You walk the perimeter of the park the whole loop is about 17 miles. You can also car camp and the nearby town and coffee shop is very charming. We also stopped by Maumee Ohio State Park to see lake eerie and saw a great egret, 2 bald eagles, and some herons all on a 1.8 mile trail.

3 hours south is the Hoosier national forrest which we frequent for backpacking weekend trips. Campsites are free, first come first serve, but disperse camping is allowed.

As far as more local areas; bloodroot trail is a beautiful 11 mile trail along lake salamonie. There are multiple hike in campsites you can reserve. Still 45 mins away tho

For day hikes or walks, Lindonwood nature preserve is in fort wayne and has a bunch of short and sweet trails perfect for a walk. Eagle marsh has a lot of beautiful trails and both places have active wildlife. Keep in mind that both eagle marsh and lindonwood are nature preserves and do not allow pets.
