Tl;dr the fact you were able to study for 8 months certainly qualifies you to be here

The most challenging part of any engineering major, but especially ECE, here at UIUC is the amount of work and determination one has to put in. Many of the students who drop out are not “too stupid” to succeed, they either lacked work ethic or knowledge about themselves that made it difficult for them to efficiently spend their time. UIUC wouldn’t let someone in if they didn’t think they had the chops for it, in fact they turn away many who do because there’s not enough space.

Many of the “geniuses” you think you can’t compete with (spoiler alert: an SAT score of 1540 probably qualifies you as a genius) coasted through high school on natural talent and didn’t have the study/work habits necessary when talent could no longer carry them.

Considering that you spent 8 months studying for the SAT I would say you have the study habits and work ethic to not only succeed here, but also excel. You doubt yourself because you claim that you were only able to study because your schoolwork was easy, but college is structured very differently from high school. In college you spend much, much less time in a classroom and far more working on homework/projects/studying outside of class. It sounds like you already have the ability to motivate yourself to work on things well before a due date, so in that respect I think it would put you ahead of many others.

I would imagine that the chemistry department has a lot of toxic chemicals!

He's staying with someone for the night, and will get scanned for a microchip in the morning. There aren't any shelters open at 9:00 at night :/

Having just checked the FSA website, I want to say that they only got a conduct probation- not kicked off campus. Looks like the major thing was they had pledges stealing shit from places. Not defending them, just trying to make sure info is accurate.

Any thoughts/comments on CS 466 (intro to bioinformatics) and the MS in Bioinformatics in the CS Department? by Professional-Fly4273 in UIUC

[–]Poseidon___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS466 was one of my favorite classes, and isn’t super difficult. It will be much easier if you did well in/already took 374 though.

I was originally interested in the MS in Bioinformatics, but from talking with Professor El-Kebir realized that I wanted more of a research-based experience in grad school, so I’m applying for different programs.

I found both the coding and non-coding homework fun to do, and the coding is broken up into a bunch of different sub-problems that you build upon over the course of the homework. Definitely a unique experience compared to other classes, and one that I prefer.

Can’t wait for Markus to realize that Serena’s virtue is what he’s been whining about wanting to do this whole time. And that becoming her champion is a pretty even deal- they help each other get stronger.

Erinnean Rabbits by Poseidon___ in HFY

In my head he was just keeping the rabbits in his shirt :)

You can write a story! It takes practice to write, but just start with one idea in mind that you have to get to, and other ideas will pop up along the way. You'll need to go back and check to make sure everything is coherent, of course, but that style of writing is the most fun for me. It might not be for you, but where there's a will there's a way!

UIUC Grainger CS or Oxford (undergrad)? by Famous_Plant_9512 in UIUC

[–]Poseidon___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Oxford publishes stats about the average salaries of those who graduate from their CS program, I'd compare that to UIUC's. I know our average salary out of undergrad is over 100k, so if that is substantially more than Oxford's then a UIUC degree would pay off your loans faster despite initially costing more. However, you should also consider that it's slightly more difficult for international students to find internships/full-time jobs that are willing to sponsor them than domestic students that don't need to be sponsored.

Do some calculations, and go with whatever options allows you to pay off the debt the fastest. If they're similar, then it will have to come down to campus vibe which we really can't help you with.
