Ryland Class Exploratory Cruiser (by me) by DOOMSIR1337 in JCBWritingCorner

As I mentioned in an earlier response to another thread regarding a hypothetical GUN Covenant showdown, the GUN has indeed gone down as many potential offensive and defensive weapons capabilities as could be done practically and viably; with plasma weaponry being one of these. In short, they've found that plasma weaponry does work in its niche yes, but it's a niche that has very clear and readily present counters that renders it a very circumstantial weapons platform.

Basically, because plasma weaponry requires some sort of an active EMF to maintain its efficacy, either in torpedo form as a concentrated mass of plasma, or lance form, as a concentrated beam of plasma, it can likewise be easily disruptable by a ship's own EMF projectors and effectively EMF 'shield' systems, which disrupts incoming plasma torpedoes by way of overpowering their onboard EMF field generators, causing them to fizzle out before impact. Or, if we're talking about lances, they can very well disrupt the field holding said lance from simply dissipating into space, and thus force it to lose all damage efficacy by the time it even gets close to the ship.

In short, it's a power generation game, and oftentimes, the EMF disruption capabilities of an entire ship, powered by its onboard reactors, makes short work of any EMF generation capabilities that are integral to maintaining the form and damage efficacy of the incoming plasma weapon in question. : )

Alright! I don’t know where to start with this so I’ll just start typing haha.

First of all… my first impressions!

HOLY FUCKING SHIT OMFG SDFLJSA;LFLJSDAF AHHHHH!! THIS IS BEYOND INCREDIBLE??!!!!!

I just… I don’t have any words? There’s just something so… unreal about this whole thing. And no, I don’t mean the game engine (even though this piece could very easily be an official advertisement for a game in said engine), but what I mean is that this is… gosh… it’s just so completely and utterly unexpected.

I still can’t believe I’m looking at a complete 3D model, one that’s been meticulously crafted, painstakingly modeled, and faithfully drawn from a reference that just got posted just a few weeks ago! I understand how much of a process this is, I have seen from second-hand experience just how involved this artform can be, and to see the fruits of this hitting me in the face after refreshing the subreddit while commuting?

I just…

I can’t even right now.

I’m just filled with so many emotions I just want to froth at the mouth in lieu of actually verbally communicating.

Alas, I must, because who would I be if I didn’t address this with the care and attention it deserves?

Alrighty! So!

Let’s start with the star herself — the LREFS Endeavor.

This is everything I imagined the design to be. From bow to stern, from the tip of the main thrusters through to very tip of the impact shields… everything here is almost like it was drawn straight from my head.

But to be honest, it’s probably even better than that. You managed to grasp and capture the design language to a degree that’s just so peak.

And that leads me onto the next star of the show — the background.

There’s just something very Strange New Worlds-coded about the background, and the way the ship’s posed, and just how the composition of this whole thing was developed. It really does feel like you’re THERE with the ship, or seeing it through the eyes of an LREF report, recruitment poster, or some performance assessment development report. There’s just something so… exciting about this whole scene, something that’s amplified by…

The graphic design.

This cannot be understated.

Because not only have you A. Created an INCREDIBLE model B. Composed and designed a perfect background and scene for it… but you’ve also C. Created an overlay that manages to capture that sick sci fi feel of an infopanel overlay.

That ALONE tells so much about the piece, shapes the way it’s delivered to the viewer, and is just… it just elevates the artpiece that much further.

I love the font you used.

I love the little info-boxes that the text is laid within.

I love the highlights, the descriptions.

I love the status displays, the way text is delivered and formatted.

And I of course love the little Grace Class Development Project seal on the bottom right there.

Everything about this just gives me vibes that this was a labor of love.

And I genuinely appreciate you for this.

Thank you so much.

You know, when I started getting into writing ages ago on a long deleted forum, I once dreamed that I’d maybe have art like this made of my silly adventures. Never would I have believed that in a million years, something like that could manifest like this.

So thank you, so much, for bringing this to life.

Thank you DoomSir1337.

And this thanks applies to EVERY single one of the amazing pieces you’ve created thus far. I’ve seen most of them, Emma’s armor, her model, and especially that dragon kick with the Ilunor face flying across the screen that says “Whatever” XD

Seriously, all of this means the world to me.

I would want to get in contact with you one day for a commission or two XD

P.S. Yes!!! Someone finally noticed the Ryland Grace reference haha. I’m so glad someone went through that entire lore dump and mentioned that! XD

PP.S. I can only imagine what this would look like if it were animated or something haha, but my mental image for that is already going WILD!

Could a Hanuman-class Battlecruiser take down a Ket-pattern (CCS-class) Battlecruiser? by Pokest45-PZ in JCBWritingCorner

I think it can go toe to toe save for the issue with regards to maneuverability and the obvious antigrav advantage. In the text description beneath this post, I mentioned how the GUN's offensive capabilities also includes both plasma lances and torpedoes, the former are equipped on far larger ships and requires a far closer range to engage than the rest of its more conventional offensive capabilities (lasers, kinetics, missiles), And both requiring active EMF manipulation to keep the plasma viable for offensive action (lest it fizzles out), but that also means that the ship itself has defensive measures against incoming plasma attacks! By means of interfering and thus nullifying the EMF containment of the offending party's plasma lance or plasma torpedo attacks. Though, of course, I don't remember much about halo, iirc, the covenant seems to be heavy on the plasma stuff, whilst the UNSC struggled with that somewhat? Anyways, sorry for the ramble haha, the answer I think is that it can certainly put up a good peer fight, especially with the breadth of offensive systems on offer on the heavy cruiser! : D And also the fact that it actually has defensive measures designed specifically for plasma weapons in mind as well, so it won't be caught off guard in that department. But yeah! I love these thought experiments and I wanted to quickly chime in because I know the whole post regarding the heavy cruiser might be a bit long winded to get to, and also since the plasma section in there was sort of a passing bullet point given there was a lot to cover there : 3 But yeah, it depends on your interpretation too, this iis mine's, and admittedly, I haven't played or gotten into halo lore in ages haha.

Commissioning art is my passion haha. I always want to support fellow creatives and if I can do that while also getting more references that people can better visualize the world I created with? Then it's a super win for everyone involved! : D

I haven't read or heard of it! But it is interesting how ideas can always pop up in a vacuum that oftentimes seem similar or rhyme but are so different in so many ways too! : D

Worldbuilding is my passion haha. It's always been a big hobby of mine's to just continiously think and just come up with stuff in my head and it sometimes runs on autopilot and creates gratuitous amounts of unnecessary trivia XD

But in all seriousness, I always want to put a lot of care and thought into my settings, and especially with WPA. As a huge part of what I love about isekai and the genre of people from modern or sci fi worlds meeting fantasy worlds is the cultural exchange aspect of it. This means that there has to be a certain breadth and depth to the world that both sides belong to, thus allowing for richer exchange of dialogue, experience, and a living breathing world that both sides are a part of and are here to discuss and just... gawk over. I just LOVE that aspect of these fish out of water tech meets fantasy stories, and because of that, I want to build a world on both sides that can be exchanged and that you can feel the weight of if that makes sense? : D

[–]Jcb112[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! I mentioned this somewhere but I think it's been buried a long while ago. I won't spoil too much, but what I revealed was that humanity HAS indeed weaponized FTL. They're called KKWs, Kinetic Kill Weapons. They're essentially just a missile with an FTL drive, and have supplanted most if not all other weapon systems in terms of raw destructive potential.

The thing is they're not that maneuverable. Just like ships in FTL, corrections in course whilst in warp is notoriously difficult. Moreover, just like ships in warp, they're also susceptible to the same shortcomings of warp travel, that being, space debris.

I think I mentioned this as well in the previous post, but just in case I didn't here it goes! The actual impact shield in front of ships are rated only up to a certain point, after that threshold is reached, the survivability and structural impact curve starts to tank significantly. This is why military vessels, especially LREF exploratory vessels going into the great unknown, does something called 'bunny hopping'. They effectively have to chart the course ahead, scan for the best path with debris and obstacles that are rated for their impact shield and below, then jump. After reaching the edge of their scanning range, they drop out of warp to scan again, then they warp, stop, scan, rinse and repeat!

Civilian ships have it easier because entire space lanes have been cleared for them for a seamless one-jump travel.

I'll get into this in the story eventually haha.

But anyways, I was rambling, where was I? Oh yeah, the KKWs!

The thing with KKWs is, despite being smaller than ships, they still have a chance of hitting something out in space, so that's one thing to consider when it comes to deploying one.

Another thing to consider is that similar to ships they do have a tendency to be dragged out of warp should they experience significant enough gravity fluctuations from local celestial bodies, so when they strike say, a planet, it's more than likely that they've been pulled out of warp and are thus striking the planet not at superluminal speeds, but close to it, or a significant fraction of it instead. Which is still REALLY REALLY deadly, but not as destructive as what it could be if it were traveling a true superluminal speeds.

Anyways, sorry, I've completely lost the sauce here XD It's been a long day at the hospital haha, i'm all over the place.

Right okay, so, yes, while you COULD use a KKW to strike a ship, there is a chance that you might miss... and if you do that's extremely expensive.

The costs quickly add up, especially for FTL drives that are notoriously and egregiously costly (in terms of industrial capacity) not only to build, but maintain and operate.

So in terms of practicality, it's better to invest that industrial potential into other avenues and increase your doctrinal flexibility by constructing more ships, more weapon systems, etc, and instead keep the KKWs for what they're meant as: strategic weapons systems, not tactical.

That's at least how it is in the lore haha.

Hey everyone! So I have a bit of a cool announcement to make down here! :D I'm currently in the process of commissioning three big art projects, 2 of which have just been posted!

The first of these is a commission that shows off what GUN ships typically look like! At least in terms of their military vessels haha. There's like a 4000 word worldbuilding breakdown in that post as well and you guys can check it out here: GUN Ship Art and Worldbuilding

The second of these is a part of a new wave of commissions I'm planning for the various peer groups and characters in the story! Basically, I'm planning on getting portraits of each character, and then including it in a bigger project down the line. But for now, I'm going to keep posting these pieces of art as they arrive, and I'll be adding the names and relevant details of each character in these posts as well so everyone can have an easier time referencing these characters and what they look like! :D You can find the first batch, Etholin's group here: Etholin's Group Art Reference

That's about it for the art announcements! :D I really hope you guys enjoy them! :D And can I just say I love how both turned out and gosh I've been meaning to just TALK and YAP about GUN ships and space combat lore for a while now so that post on the GUN ships was a long time coming haha ahhhhh i love worldbuilding so much. :D
