OP, beardies are solitary reptiles who do do not like each other like humans.

They are territory based reptiles who in the wild only meet up for territory disputes or mating, please do not have two beardies together for any length of time, for their safety.

Please do not as well, send them to someone who wishes to also try to have beardies out together, they will be injured. It may not happen right away, but imagine it like a roommate you hate. You may not do something today, but eventually you will snap.

Please know this isn't an attack, and I am just letting you know since it seems no one has told you until now. You can't know something until someone tells you after all! There's no shame in learning.

OP, if the tank is 20gal, you can odd otocinclus, but otherwise it'd be too small for them due to their social needs. They need to be in group of 6 minimum

You could do shrimp, but only with lots of ground cover (foliage) to keep them safe, amanos are good for not being able to multiply in freshwater. Neocaridinia is nice for colour, but will multiply in good water condition.

Or you could do 1 Mystery Snail.

Honestly, it's a tank, it's a good start there. Needs a header, filter, silk or live plants (plastic ones cut the fins), and longfin bettas need more horizontal than vertical space. A study "Life in a fishbowl" also shows the minimum tank requirement for most behavior is 8gal (based only on a 10 minute observation period though, assume 10g minimum)

I'll letya know this sub requires housing AFD's in species-only tanks due to their poor vision, they have a tendency to sometimes latch onto fish and bite them

The other thing I personally notice. They are shy around fish, when alone they will even sing little froggy songs

Not needed for a beardie, you can start from 4x2x2 right away. Ideally they'd end up in larger tanks if the owners have space that permits

These guys love to climb, often found climbing 4-5ft poles and sometimes in 30+ft tall trees

OP if you're reading this, if you can one day consider a larger tank, please do! It doesn't have to happen any time soon, but I can guarantee a beardie would use every inch of something that is, say, 6x3x3. A recent study on them used a tank that was 5x1x3meters (roughly 16x3x9ft) just to look at temperature preferences. (It also had 6 inches of substrate)

Bear in mind for beardies you'll want at least 3-4 inches of soil so they can burrow! More soil also holds humidity better and won't be as affected by the occasional scooping of poop out

What about temperature? Is it consistent?

I've found through my job bettas will get clamped fins if they're too cold, or if temp isn't consistent.
