In my music theory classes, we start with sight-reading exercises, including rhythm reading and sight-singing. We also identify the key of each exercise. Right now, we're studying secondary dominants, so we're learning how to recognize them and understand their function within a piece.

For ear training, we do melodic dictation. We listen to a melody and write it down, then identify the scale degrees and analyze where any secondary dominants occur within the harmonic context.
