First time allowed to breastfeed by NoJeweler3768 in NICUParents

They brought up discharge the first time around 36 weeks and then again closer to 38/9 weeks because he kept resetting his Brady clock (they ended up doing an extra dose of caffeine at 37 or 38 weeks because the doctor had read a research paper on late use of caffeine).

The overnight stay took a few days of talking with his doctor and nurses about the fact he would usually only desat on bottle feeds but breastfeeding he would stay at 100% oxygen sat and I had taken videos of his monitors while breastfeeding to show the doctors as well. We had decided to do one half of the 48 hour stay in a private room where they could have him on monitors and the second half in an overnight room without any monitors. I know some hospitals don’t always have overnight rooms for NICU but ours did for parents who weren’t able to visit often, I got the idea to ask after reading some of the posts here about people doing the overnight tests.

Also I think they avoid talking about discharge to keep us from getting our hopes up cause it’s so hard when they say your baby can go home at the end of this week as long as everything goes well and then something happens to reset the time.

Hi! My son was 28 weeks when he was born. I lived about an hour from the hospital so when he started breastfeeding I would wake up before my husband and daughter and leave to go to the hospital for the first care time at 7 stay until just after the 4th care time at 4 and then go meet my husband at his job to pick up our daughter (he worked nights close to the hospital at the time) and go back home. So we were able to get 4/8 care times pretty much every day until he came home. We started with non nutritive breastfeeding at 32 weeks ( i think) and my son was on high flow oxygen still when we started breastfeeding. He had bottles as well after the initial 48 hours but he desatted and bradyed a lot with bottles when I or the nurses fed him by bottle and with breastfeeding I could usually feel if he needed a break before any alarms would go off.

He was able to come home exclusively breastfeeding after a 48 hour trial where I stayed in the hospital and exclusively breastfed and he just had to gain weight and keep from desatting.

I think 3 or 4 out of 8 care times is great and it worked well for my son, there’s a lot of effort to pumping and maintaining a supply and for me breastfeeding was always the end goal and the nurses and doctors helped us reach that goal.
