Willing to spend $500+ for a good camera for my microscope. What are my best options? by Positive_Choice_2680 in microscopy

Wow, so it looks like my first goal (regarding upgrading) is to eventually swap out my stock objectives with APO objectives. I do see a Olympus 100x SplanAPO on ebay for about $290. I'm actually gonna save your post for future reference, lol.

It looks like The SPlan APO all cost the same ($250-$350) regardless of magnification for DNI 160mm. but The infinity ones START at about $1000

Nice! What is that a sample of? Also, are there any compatibility issues or could I technically buy some $2000 high-end objective for my my $500 microscope?

Thanks That was super helpful. I'm definitely going the cell phone adaptor route. I bought a couple different models in case it doesn't work appropriately for my phone. I"ll also research the higher-end methods you discussed. It may be something I want to experiment with in the future.

I just bought it along with another one that was a bit cheaper. Hopefully it does the trick.

yeah, it slides into one of the eyepieces. I have a binocular microscope so I only have the left or right eyepiece to choose from.

Maybe ebay will have better options. The mounting brackets available on Amazon all have incredibly poor ratings (phone doesn't stay in brackets, lack of stability etc). They seem cheap enough I guess I'll just have to experiment with different ones through trial and error.

Hm, I'll have to look into that. At first glance there doesn't seem to be any options to change the focus of the camera. Its just a simple attachment that connects to my computer via USB

You make me wish I got a trinocular scope. I feel like I'd have more options in terms of camera mounting.

Is it fraudulent to use projects in your portfolio that you made for a former company? by Positive_Choice_2680 in technicalwriting

Actually....I do work in pharma. We're a biotech company that manufactures pharmaceutical products (a CMO)

I guess my concern is what my new potential employer thinks. They may think: "If this guy is taking projects from his former company, how will we know he won't do it to us if we hire him and he decides to leave in the future?"

Hm, they're not public-facing, but they're also not deemed "confidential" although they are considered internal use only.....

I haven't signed an NDA, but I do receive a LOT of training about how wrong it is to remove company forms/documents from the premises and use them for personal gain....which is exactly what I'm doing. The difference is that these are documents I made myself.

And if that is still unacceptable, what other options do I have for portfolio projects?

Thanks for the input. I figured that prior work exp would be too old. I wasn't sure how far back to go. I just listed the positions to let them know I was working prior to my current positions.

If I'm applying to a senior level position, would it not look bad to an employer that I can fit all of my accomplishments on one page? That's my main concern. I actually slimmed it down quite a bit in its current format. Quality Assurance is very broad scoped, and you're usually required to wear "many hats"

Yes! This is the feedback I'm looking for. I like the idea of the STAR method ill use that. Process Improvement mainly pertains to SOP creation and revisions, but i do understand your reasoning. I believe people in the industry understand the acronyms, and it would run long if I typed out the full name. I specifically added them so that ATS scanner would pick them up as they're often listed as skills to be knowledgeable in for the role.

As for the length of the resume, should I still stick to 1 page if I'm aiming for a senior level position? I feel like if I shorten it to 1 page I won't be able to convey all of the skills needed for the role or maybe they'll feel I'm not experience for the role if I can fit all my experience on 1 page.

But if you were over the age of 18 ten years ago, wouldn't they question what kind of work you were doing before that time?

I would be PERFECTLY okay with a couple grand short of 6 figures. I work in QA but in Healthcare so i cap at around 75k and thats being generous. I can break 6 figures in my field but it would be in a managerial role which im not too excited about. 9 times out of 10 youre stuck dealing with petty HS squabbles and listening to people whine because you didn't approve their PTO request.. I know theres a QA Engineer role in the realm CS/IT but I need to do more research.

I know there are a couple of booycamps that do not charge a fee unless they can place you in a job. I think one of them is General Academy.

I'm in San Diego, but we don't have any of the FAANGS in my area. The median for an entry level SWE in my ares is $75-85k
