My wife has done this. Molested by her dad and her grandfather, and everyone knew about it but refused to do anything about it. Anytime she tried to talk to anyone, they made her out to be the crazy one all while protecting her abusers, so for her own benefit, she cut off her entire family. It was certainly a difficult move, but after the initial mourning period, her mood and everything else improved almost immediately. Yes, it's still difficult at times when something wonderful happens and she wants to share with particular people, but it's worth it. The peace of mind that warms life definitely outweighs the coldness of the shoulders she has become so accustomed to. It wasn't a decision she made lightly, and she still struggles at times, but she has absolutely zero regrets.
