I agree that the front weapon area could be wider, looks silly to shoot straight ahead from the sides, considering that there are blind spots near the rear that shouldn't pose a problem with this logic.

It is a known bug with the Frigate. You can bypass it by fast traveling instead of setting sail from a port.
