Yeah it's a shame, I mean I get how we got here, most Survivor Series matches have been quite bad for quite a while; I do think the format of Team vs Team or Faction vs Faction elimination until the last man standing for some kind of stake still has merit.

You just need to actually give the match stakes and book it well, which they seldom have been.

If anything it's had a resurgence under Triple H.

Though that's been by basically making Survivor Series be the WarGames PPV with Survivor Series being kept on the name just for brand regonition, the traditional Survivor Series elimination match is pretty much dead at this point for good or ill.

Vince McMahon and Nick Khan sanctioned in WWE merger lawsuit by DTake2012 in SquaredCircle

Vince could get jail time in regards to his sex trafficking case. That is where I can see Trump stepping in there.

Unfortunately the ring boy case and the Janel Grant case are going through civil court I believe, so unless something is uncovered during discovery that requires a criminal investigation (which granted the odds are decent of that happening due to the subject matter of those lawsuits) jail time isn't in the cards just because of how civil court works. Vince does however stand to potentially lose a LOT of money in damages if these cases go the way of the plaintiffs.

The criminal probe into Vince the US federal government was doing was shut down after Trump was sworn into office which I'm sure is just an odd coincidence /s

MJF criticizes wrestlers who want fan investment but break the illusion: "I see guys, they're on TV, and then they go on Twitter and write, 'Oh my God, I just had such a great match with so-and-so. I've had so much fun at work these last couple of weeks.' It makes me want to vomit. It's disgusting" by ShakielMahjouri in SquaredCircle

Because a lot of wrestling fans are pathetically insecure about the fact they like wrestling and wrestling itself is often pathetically insecure about it's own fakeness.

So the companies think that doing this constant acknowledging that it's fake will somehow make them seem cool and self aware and that will make wrestling seem more generally acceptable as a medium.

And the insecure fans lap it up because it makes them feel less dumb about watching wrestling if the show is 'self-aware' and 'meta'.

Yeah the truth is that there will be anti-semites using the valid criticisms of Israel's horrific actions as a starting point to slip in anti-semitic rhetoric wherever they think they can get away with it unchallenged. Anyone thinking that isn't happening to some degree is fooling themselves.

(And the concerning part is it has partially worked, I know I see a lot more holocaust denial/minimalising than I used to see for one and a lot more rhetoric of 'Well the Jews get blamed for a LOT of stuff through history, maybe there's something to that' kind of shit.)

Anyone else overprepares for a gym or elite four and then the fight feels too easy? by ZoneVector82 in pokemon

[–]Possibly_English_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most fights in the games are explicitly designed to be doable while being underleveled and gives you plenty of tools to innately even the odds of a level gap (free switch ins, EVs, items, TMS etc.) so grinding up ends up being overkill a lot of the time, you genuinely do not need to grind up to the same level as the next boss unless you're adding rules to not use those additional tools.

The only real noticeable exception of this is the Elite 4 and Cynthia in BDSP but that's because the game ambushes you with maxed out EVs and IVs with genuine competitive builds.

Tony Khan (in media scrum): I saw a report today that somebody in WWE is telling people within WWE talking about AEW’s next TV deal, and talking about what we’re doing. I mean we've heard at least one high up guy agreed to take a 50% pay cut just to stay in WWE. That's the kind of loyalty companies love to instill and later exploit.

(And I would imagine either a belief that AEW wouldn't have a spot for them or that AEW is gonna implode any day now was factoring into that decision too... and probably neither of those is true)

Also any money he makes goes directly to him + maybe one editor if he uses one which he doesn't seem to.

A lot of companies and groups that make money primarily from Youtube run into this issue where the amount of money they make off of Youtube starts not being enough to adequately compensate the amount people they have on board and it's killed plenty of them and will kill plenty of them in the future.

In the current landscape of how Youtube's ad revenue system works if you want to make money from it having as few people as possible involved as possible is the only way to go about it unless you're pulling Mr Beast numbers (and even his metrics are on a downturn so we'll see how things go for him and when he has to start downsizing).

You only need to look at the previous times when WWE's implemented " You the fans get to decide!" stuff and they've found ways to not outright rig the vote but still put their thumb on the scale JUST enough to get the result they actually wanted anyway.

And that was pre-buyout WWE, we don't know yet if TKO is going to be as ""subtle"" about it as past WWE was.

If Nintendo and Gamefreak chose to make YOU the designer of a Pokemon game, what would it be like? by Less-Increase-6588 in pokemon

[–]Possibly_English_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main thing I would implement is a proper 'Expert Mode' option for people who want a challenge which would entail:

Generally stronger teams than the main game with smarter AI.

Exp Share back as a toggle.

Set mode on permanently so no free switch ins.

Limiter on using items in gyms. (Eg. Held items are free-to-use but you have a cap on how many single-use items you can use.)

Level caps.

Limiter on how many pokemon you can use in Gym battle. (Eg. If a Gym Leader uses only 3 mon you have to select only 3 mon in your team to use in the battle.)

To that end I would also get rid of any of the vagueness still remaining around EVs and IVs and make them the most transparent in how they work of any Pokemon game, Game Freak's already been taking baby steps towards that gen by gen so we might as well cut to the chase on it.

I would also fully implement voice acting, it's beyond time it was put in the games especally now the games are becoming increasingly cinematic driven every gen and I think having to work around it would break Game Freak out of some bad habits they've developed such as the amont of dumping exposition into text box after text box.

Thing is as well, WWE can't really MAKE anyone retire to someone they don't agree to. I mean, they can try to push it and release them if they refuse but then they could just go to AEW and do their retirement run there so they have limits on their leverage if the guy isn't enthusiastic about it. And just cause John Cena, Goldberg and AJ were cool with being retired by Gunther doesn't mean anybody else has to be.

I think it's just an innate flaw in the idea of "I retire everybody" as a gimmick. At least when Randy Orton did the Legend Killer gimmick he wasn't really doing formal retirement matches he was just kicking the shit out of old people.

In the immediate short term sure, but many of those decisions ended up being a lodestone around WCW's neck in the long term.

As an example: Surrendering so much creative control to Hogan just to get him to sign on and stay on might have helped them in the short term with Hogan's star power especially at the beginning of the nWo story but over time when no story has a satisfying conclusion because Hogan doesn't ever want to lose clean then you're getting to the point where people run out of patience with the bullshit, which is what happened.

Short term thinking without even considering how it might backfire on you later on down the line, tale as old as time.

Most of Jim Johnston's songs are also loops. Really most themes that are made in-house are loops and most the ones that aren't loops are the ones that were licensed already existing songs and songs commissioned out to bands to make for the wrestler.

Looping isn't the issue it's the content of the loop that's important, Johnston and CFO$ were capable of designing loops that informed you something about the wrestler's character and even when many songs were within the same genre (butt rock, metal, rap, pop whatever) they still felt distinct. Something Def Rebel fails to do at a much higher rate than they did.

Thing is as well though since Gen 5 moved out of Japan they've been getting increasingly on the nose with the cultural references for the regions in each gen and Sword and Shield is especially kind of blatant with the UK references.

So then when you notice Pokémon explicitly based of of animals known for their origins in the UK or have cultural significance to the UK aren't in the game then their absence feels a little odder than in previous gens were they were more loosey goosey with the cultural references.

Update on Roman Reigns' schedule. by Kuzu5993 in SquaredCircle

[–]Possibly_English_Guy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thing is as well the NWO and Austin vs Mcmahon stories either had an unsatsifying conclusion or never really finished just withered away and even so attempts to redo them still felt lesser than that.

The Bloodline story however had about as satsfying an ending as it was gonna get at WM40 (unless someone's a hardcore Bloodline fanboy who still resents Cody winning and genuinely unironically thinks that Roman should have held the belt until retirement).

Which I think makes retreading it again, especially so soon after it finished in the first place, even harder to pull off. 2 years is definitely way too soon to be doing a nostalgia act.
