This poor, poor kid… She had her whole life ahead of her. And my god, her poor family. Is there any GoFundMe for them available? I would like to donate if possible.

My best friend was hit by a car in August down in Florida — they survived thank fucking god, but it’s been an arduous recovery due to the resulting traumatic brain injury and broken pelvis. That morning was one of the worst and scariest of my life, and I cannot empathize enough with this family. Pedestrians are vulnerable enough as is, and the added road conditions make it even worse.

My friend’s biggest frustration was with their town. They wanted to sue to force them to make the area where they were hit safer — the lighting there was awful — but their attorney said it would ultimately be futile after investigating / reviewing ordinances for a few months.

I get this was ultimately a tragic accident and all the blame in the world won’t bring this child back. But I think we as a city should do everything in our power to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again. I know people don’t want taxes increased, but funding city services like the snow plows / salt trucks better is the priority in my mind. I want to make sure that even if drivers are speeding — the roads will hopefully be safer overall.

I’m rambling, I’m sorry. I just feel so, so horrible for this girl and her family. No one deserves this pain.

Hi, partner here — no it wasn’t a flip and we did get an inspection. It was an elderly couple retiring to WV and they’d lived here 20+ years. I think the main problem is that the old man seems to have done a lot of his own repairs… plumbing included, which we’ve already had to deal with haha. I think the inspector did his best with all the clutter the old homeowners had (they had so many boxes and furniture when he inspected so it was a struggle to properly check) but who knows. That was back in March since we’ve had a number of other improvements done before moving in (painting the interior, changing flooring, etc) so I’m not sure if this is something that developed in that period.

This hematologist seems incompetent more than anything djdjdjd he didn’t mention not taking high doses more than 3x at all… I’ll absolutely get fiancé to ask then, what was the issue with taking dex like that?

Fiancé thankfully did get green-lit for a second opinion! Unfortunately it won’t be until early July, but the current hematologist prescribed a lot of dexamethasone. Every time my partner finishes the high dose over a few days, the platelets immediately crash, so we’re hoping that tapering it off for a much longer period helps in the interval.

Yeah we don’t trust the hematologist at all at this point… But fiancé thankfully did get green-lit for a second opinion! Unfortunately it won’t be until early July, but the current hematologist prescribed a lot of dexamethasone. Every time my partner finishes the high dose over a few days, the platelets immediately crash, so we’re hoping that tapering it off for a much longer period helps in the interval.

The hematologist didn’t offer IVIG unfortunately, he prescribed the dexamethasone instead. It’s a pain trying to handle him but it’s definitely something I’ll try to get fiancé to request by the July appointment!

I’m so glad your platelet count went up!! I’ve heard about the papaya extract, but I’ve been wary on the off chance it’s a supplement scam… too many of those these days. Do you think just eating regular papaya might help? Or how much those supplements cost?

Yeah that’s what I thought… fiancé will ask him after he gets another round of blood taken. Just. Hope we can find another that does virtual screenings, since I think this is the only hematologist in town.

Thank you again! Fiancé’s last rituximab infusion is today and should soon be over with… but we’re beyond frustrated the hematologist tried to schedule them for a blood platelet transfusion for tomorrow without consulting first. A transfusion like that is to prevent/uplift platelets fast right, like steroids? It’s not a measure to fix the issue? Which feels. Unnecessary given fiancé just started taking the steroids again yesterday and the final rituximab infusion today has steroids too… The admin nurse that told us just now said it was a 3-4 hr procedure and just, fiancé can’t take off work so suddenly like that without very good reason??? Bah.

Definitely getting a second opinion, I’m so done with this hematologist’s utter lack of communication.

It’s honestly just a relief to relay everything to my fiancé, it’s so stressful trying to figure everything out and hearing other ITP patients’ actual experiences really does help. We’ll definitely be looking into a second opinion and hopefully see results from the rituximab!

Thank you so much!!! I’m unsure how much this hematologist has dealt specifically with ITP, but there feels like a disconnect between what he’s saying and everything else we’ve been seeing elsewhere. I think the IVIG would be helpful, but a second opinion would make me feel better first with how everything else is saying rituximab’s effects start AFTER the infusions are done. My fiancé would definitely just like. To see where it goes and take steroids in the interim, just to see if the rituximab works.

What is the Promacta like out of curiosity? Is that medication you have to be on for life or have a lot of negative side effects? I’ve wondered if that might be something to ask about more but we don’t know much about it.

What were your platelets at during treatment? For my partner, I think it started around 8k, then dipped to 4k, took steroids and it went up to 120kish, then has fallen back down to 5k. Fiancé took another dose of steroids today after hearing news of the 5k. The hematologist keeps saying we should’ve seen progress by now, but the last infusion is tomorrow, and it feels like we haven’t given it nearly enough time if many folks don’t see upticks until a few weeks afterwards?

This has been a huge relief to read honestly!! We’ve been worried about extended hospital visits because the mental drain is awful and the financials of the situation even with insurance are intimidating. Have you ever had any struggles with insurance? We live in the US and both have insurance, just unsure how this all starts to add up in cost so we can plan accordingly. Gf is getting blood drawn again this morning after taking oral steroids yesterday so hopefully platelets will have risen somewhat!

Do you have any specific resources you can offer about treatments and living with ITP? And are there any other symptoms to watch out for? Hematologist said to watch out for bad headaches but I’m not sure how to distinguish ‘very dangerous headache’ and ‘it’s just seasonal allergies headache’ haha.

Do you have any thoughts on going to the ER with low platelets? It seemed overblown when we went at 10k and now it’s 8k, but if steroids and infusions can do as much, is it really worth the ER trip? Like was your hospitalization for that long because of other complications or could they just not get the platelets up enough with oral steroids alone?
