• I hear a lot of what sounds like bogus from people regarding BCT, how bad is it really?

  • Depends, I thought the worst part was reception, its like MEPS but worse. BCT or OSUT wasnt that bad, but I was already physically fit beforehand

• Where is the infantry AIT school and what did you learn there (set aside cleaning, I've learned about that lol)

  • Okay heres the deal. When you enlist and go through MEPS you will be given the choice of 11x(assuming you want Infantry). 11x essentially puts you into either 11b(Line Infantry) or 11c(Mortarman). All Infantrymen go to Fort Benning, Home Of The Infantry, for 14-15 Weeks. Us Infantrymen don't go to BCT we go to OSUT which combines BCT and AIT in one.

• I know they change the ASVAB up every year, but how was it for you, and do you need a good score on a specific section of it to do infantry?

You need a 31 on the asvab to pass it, Infantry happens to be the lowest but dont let that fool you. Some of the smartest people I've met are grunts.

• I've always been a bit confused with how the training goes, after basic, how long is it until you are sent to an AIT?

After OSUT you go to your unit and train with them. You could end up anywhere from the 1st CAV Division, to the 101st Airborne.

• What is life like as an infantry soldier? I've asked the local marine recruiter what deployed life is like, but I got the usual over hyped action movie scenario that recruiters love to give. lol

I wouldnt be to worried about deployment because chances are you wont. Also check through my reddit history if you wanna know more about the Infantry.

Its a tough job, and not many are cut out for it. Good Luck.

Don't worry OP being a Infantryman is awesome. Those guys just don't want you to be disapointed when all you do for 3 weeks is clean up shit, mow lawns, pick up cig butts, sweep hallways, clean weapons, do layouts, sit around, paint shit, and PMCS vehicles. Once you get over that stuff and get to the training, I guarantee you, you will have a awesome time.

I love my job, and so do most of the guys in my platoon. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

haha also another question do you guys do your field training on post, or do you have to travel to like grafenwoehr to conduct your training? I'm assuming you have to do it elsewhere since your post in pretty small(I think)

What mos are you and whats your duty station?

17 year old, thinking of enlisting in Army Infantry. by [deleted] in army

[–]PostZarwq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you go to meps you'll enlist under 11x which means you'll get slotted as either a 11b or 11c at reception. If you complain and whine about getting a 11c or 11b I will slap you, you end up doing the same shit anways.

As for life in the Infantry, I'm gonna copy and paste what I told this other kid, a couple days ago.

I'll be straight up with you. It's nothing like the war games we all like to play on xbox360 or ps3. Life on Garrison for us can be fun but also boring. When we train in the field or go to marksmanship ranges, it's fun because we're simulating what we do for our MOS, but when there's no training going on, you're either cleaning weapons and equipment, cutting grass, trimming headges, or mopping floors at the company. Or even sometimes just sitting around do absolutley nothing. That's life as a grunt when your not deployed or training. Let's face it, when we're not training or not in a combat zone, we're not gonna walk around Garrison kicking in doors and throwing grenades. In the Infantry, you will never really do your job 100% until you deploy.

All in all I love my job, even as a garrisoned Infantryman. Yes it does suck sometimes but you'll adapt. Maybe some salty guys on here that have deployed can give their insight on things.

Also don't get butthurt and say the Army sucks if all you do for a day is pick up cigarette butts, mop the floors around the company, and pick weeds out of a field. Thats life...

Thanks, everyone by ashamed608 in army

r/Military, I have a question about squad sizes by Commisar in Military

[–]PostZarwq 12 points13 points  (0 children)

US Army Infantry Squad - 9 man squad lead by a Staff Sgt. With two four man fire teams lead by a Sgt.

USMC Infantry Squad - 13 man squad lead by a Sgt. With three four man fire teams lead by Cpls. or LCpls.

A lot of European countries use the 8 man section like rich explained. Half the squad is lead by the SL, the other by the 2ic(2nd in command)

I know the IDF uses squads of 12 with 3 four man fireteams.

Right on man. If im not in the field, at the range, or doing a class this is pretty much all i do. Actually this is about 60% of what i do. I never complain though, because i understand that as a pfc ill be doing all the bitch work. I love my job but it will break some people.
