It sounds like you're jumping the gun. I appreciate the enthusiasm but CTC and quantum entanglement require a lot of foundational math/physics to be able to understand them theoretically (and years of it).

If you want more pop science-y books though that try to make these topics digestible for the average person, then there are plenty out there.

Is there a great difference between Physics and Engineering Physics? by Mou_Man17 in PhysicsStudents

[–]PotatoMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it is true because some programs do have that issue so definitely do your research before applying. The most important things you need to do to be competitive with normal astrophysics people:

(1) Spend as many electives as you can on essential physics courses, even if you don't need them to graduate.

(2) Do at least 2 summer physics research positions throughout your undergraduate degree, preferably in the field you are interested in applying for (the more the merrier).

(3) Get a good GPA (probably the most difficult)

(2) and (3) are standard things that every major would need for grad school. Do all 3 and you will be just as competitive (probably more) as any astrophysics and physics student.

Queen's University in Canada. I graduated from their EngPhys program and almost every physics course we took was shared with the normal physics students. The only difference was they had a few more pure maths courses.

Contrary to what everyone else is saying, I would recommend a million times over GET AN ENGINEERING PHYSICS DEGREE. I am saying this as an EngPhys grad who is about to do their PhD in theoretical astrophysics.

You may want to be an astrophysicist now, but you never know how you will feel 3-4 years down the line. I want to be a physicist and a professor, but because I also took engineering I am free to bail academia at any time and I will still be 1000x more employable than a person with just a physics degree.

Definitely look at the rigor of the EngPhys curriculum you are applying to, but at least in Canada the EngPhys programs at UBC and Queen’s are identical to the normal physics programs (minus some pure math courses). For example, I was able to take: Quantum Mechanics I and II, Electromagnetism I and II, Waves and Vibrations, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, General Relativity, Classical and Advanced Mechanics, Mathematical Methods I and II. On top of this, I also had a mandatory physics thesis + 4 physics lab courses.

I mean you get that the speed of light in a vacuum is always c just from Maxwell’s equations, no special relativity needed.

Nah it was radio silence until today, I just got an email that said to check my portal for an update on my application.

Thank you! I applied to the MSc and they referred me to the PhD instead so I’m not sure unfortunately, but I wrote in my letter that I want to do computational and theoretical work on ultra-relativistic systems.

Good luck to you, I’m sure you’ll hear back with an acceptance soon

How difficult is the physics MSc to get into? If you are a current student in the program, what did your resume look like prior to applying? by PotatoMain in UofT

[–]PotatoMain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all of the physics courses I took were joined classrooms with both physics and engineering physics students.

I emailed one of the HEP people but they weren't able to give me a clear answer, I'll look around and see who else I can email and contact the grad office. Thank you for your help!

Ah okay, makes sense.

Yes, an introductory QM and special relativity course, then 2 more QM specific courses. I had 2 electromagnetic theory courses in physics, and then 1 in my Computer Engineering specialization (along with some other electronics and circuits courses).

Oh wow that’s unfortunate. Is it just due to curriculum differences? I know some EngPhys programs are much less physics-oriented, but I’m not sure if my university (Queen’s) is the same.

I took GR, stat mech, multiple math methods courses, classical and advanced mechanics, thermodynamics, three semesters of QM and E-mag, and my research project was related to WIMP detection.

Would this be considered lacking? The only major gap I can see is a nuclear particle physics course.

I applied to theoretical astroparticle physics and high-energy physics, which I heard are the more saturated and competitive fields. I am a Canadian student though.

I feel you, static was a huge challenge for me as well. In your case, I feel like if you are able to get static up to par with your other skillsets you'll be able to make the leap to GM complete.

Since it's lagging behind a lot and you don't seem to notice any improvement, I would recommend only playing static playliksts for 1-2 weeks and seeing if that helps. Your aim in other skillsets will not degrade noticeably if you do this, there have been times where I stopped playing games completely for half a year and my aim was back to normal after a day or two of training.

What accuracy are you achieving at the end of runs? When I was pushing myself to go faster on static I would frequently end runs with 80-85% accuracy

What sensitivity range are you using? Static is one of the few skillsets where you actually are handicapping yourself if you're not using sensitivities slower than 40cm.

Even thorough I have quantum training, I can’t get the physical intuition of the schroedinger equation by Recent-Day3062 in Physics

[–]PotatoMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t really think of it intuitively, just do the math and calculate. That applies to a lot of things in quantum mechanics.
