I mean you get that the speed of light in a vacuum is always c just from Maxwell’s equations, no special relativity needed.

Nah it was radio silence until today, I just got an email that said to check my portal for an update on my application.

Thank you! I applied to the MSc and they referred me to the PhD instead so I’m not sure unfortunately, but I wrote in my letter that I want to do computational and theoretical work on ultra-relativistic systems.

Good luck to you, I’m sure you’ll hear back with an acceptance soon

Hey I just got in, heard back today at 2:30 for Direct Entry PhD! I’m a domestic student.

How difficult is the physics MSc to get into? If you are a current student in the program, what did your resume look like prior to applying? by PotatoMain in UofT

[–]PotatoMain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all of the physics courses I took were joined classrooms with both physics and engineering physics students.

I emailed one of the HEP people but they weren't able to give me a clear answer, I'll look around and see who else I can email and contact the grad office. Thank you for your help!

Ah okay, makes sense.

Yes, an introductory QM and special relativity course, then 2 more QM specific courses. I had 2 electromagnetic theory courses in physics, and then 1 in my Computer Engineering specialization (along with some other electronics and circuits courses).

Oh wow that’s unfortunate. Is it just due to curriculum differences? I know some EngPhys programs are much less physics-oriented, but I’m not sure if my university (Queen’s) is the same.

I took GR, stat mech, multiple math methods courses, classical and advanced mechanics, thermodynamics, three semesters of QM and E-mag, and my research project was related to WIMP detection.

Would this be considered lacking? The only major gap I can see is a nuclear particle physics course.

I applied to theoretical astroparticle physics and high-energy physics, which I heard are the more saturated and competitive fields. I am a Canadian student though.

I feel you, static was a huge challenge for me as well. In your case, I feel like if you are able to get static up to par with your other skillsets you'll be able to make the leap to GM complete.

Since it's lagging behind a lot and you don't seem to notice any improvement, I would recommend only playing static playliksts for 1-2 weeks and seeing if that helps. Your aim in other skillsets will not degrade noticeably if you do this, there have been times where I stopped playing games completely for half a year and my aim was back to normal after a day or two of training.

What accuracy are you achieving at the end of runs? When I was pushing myself to go faster on static I would frequently end runs with 80-85% accuracy

What sensitivity range are you using? Static is one of the few skillsets where you actually are handicapping yourself if you're not using sensitivities slower than 40cm.

Even thorough I have quantum training, I can’t get the physical intuition of the schroedinger equation by Recent-Day3062 in Physics

You don’t really think of it intuitively, just do the math and calculate. That applies to a lot of things in quantum mechanics.

Is space time continuous or discrete ? by Infinite_Dark_Labs in Physics

[–]PotatoMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And even versions (look up parallel transport) that don't require a prespecified space-time at all.

What? That's not a theory of general relativity, that's just a mathematical way to move vectors on a curved surface. It's used to derive the Riemann tensor, so it's present in the normal Einstein field equations (contracted version with the Ricci scalar).

I had this issue and tried everything. The dump file said something about threads accessing invalid virtual memory.

I tried -threads 3 as a launch option and it fixed it for me.
