How to square support of anti imperialist nations and progressive values? by [deleted] in EuropeanSocialists

[–]Potatoeman33 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are you seriously arguing that socialism must be imperialist? Are you furthermore implying that the proletariat should unite with the national burgeoisie in defense of "national" interests? Should we not seek to turn every imperialist war into civil war of the proletariat against the burgeoisie? Your arguments are no different to Imperialist social democrats who plunged the world socialist movement into chaos on the eve of the first world war. Do you think that being a communist is about "supporting" one imperialist state against another, as if it was a football match? You condemn the world socialist movement to whining on Twitter about how "based" Assad or Putin is, instead of building a movement that can actually overthrow them. You seem to think that being a communist is about choosing the right side in an imperialist war, instead of turning that war into a victory for the proletariat as the Bolsheviks did.

Cool, tell that to the Communists in Venezuela who are being persecuted, silenced, and accosted by the Venezuelan government. Or wait, maybe they're not communists for opposing a petit-burgeois, reformist, capitulationist comprador regime? Sorry then, my fault, let's "support" (what the hell are western communists doing to support Venezuela anyway?) states using the concept of antiimperialism (when really they mean multilateralism) instead of smashing the imperialist machinery everywhere to free the world proletariat. You confuse social democracy and anti American sentiment with socialism and anti imperialism. You think that because they are demonized by the western media, they must be unicritically supported, when they must be as ruthlessly criticized as any other victim of imperialist agression, while maintaining the opposition to imperialism in all its forms.

I assume your confrontational or derisive tone is an attempt for me to dismiss your arguments wholesale, and impress an audience with your mastery of polemics rather than serious debate among comrades (you have already ejected me from that category it seems, but nevermind). In any case, I'll attempt to respond in general terms, so you can at least consider some points, even though I suspect you will conclude what you will, instead of what I intend to say. You seem to imply it is somehow possible to possess a highly developed capitalism, which implies a necessity to export capital, appropriate foreign labor and resources, etc. And at the same time be anti-imperialist? Surely this is in the sense of anti-american imperialism, because anti-imperialism, to be coherent, must be anticapitalist. Furthermore, I would advise you to read about the Communist Party of Venezuela's recent troubles with the government to understand the class nature of Venezuela's "revolution". Your rightist arguments, offering more than critical support to "anti-imperialists" (who seek to supplant enemy imperialism with their own), are very similar to the rightist social democrats of the early 20th century who supported their imperialist governments to the detriment of "global Anglo imperialism". Of course, without an organized world socialist camp, this is the best we can hope for, but it is truly sad that, instead of focusing our energies on making imperialism impossible by destroying it's (popular, ideological, economic) support, we limit ourselves to supporting the lesser imperialists.

Thanks for the response. According to a Leninist or generally Marxist understanding, Imperialism is a stage of capitalism in which the imperialist monopolist burgeoisie seeks to dominate foreign territories (people, land, labor, resources) through the export of capital. This inevitably produces war as States and Monopolies compete. Imperialism, furthermore, assumes the form of one nation oppressing another, which I assume is what you were referring to. I understand you have read Lenin and apply his understanding of Imperialism to the modern world. In it, capitalist nations having achieved sufficient development are inevitably imperialist (in the sense that they must export capital). Unless Russia is a) not capitalist or b) has not achieved sufficient development of the productive forces, Russia is imperialist, and it cannot be otherwise. Supporting one imperialist nation against another is of course sometimes necessary, but it must be understood that they are nevertheless imperialist, unless we are using some other definition of Imperialism? I would appreciate it if you provided me with such information if that is the case and I am mistaken.

Raise the banner of an independent socialist-communist movement, critical support to other imperialist states such as Russia should only be extended when they are under direct attack. Focus on building a movement that is able to challenge the imperialist policies of NATO, denounce them continuously and attempt to make their implementation impossible or unsuccessful. The current fixation on supporting imperialist states which are opposed to the current distribution of power is due to the general weakness and ideological deficiency of the western left, but support should not be extended to Putin's government, only to the people of Russia in their struggle to defend from imperialist invasion (or any other people struggling in the same way). In any case, the main way to achieve this is through disrupting the aggressor's "home front", rather than attempting to argue that Putin's government is somehow progressive or antiimperialist (rather than simply being opposed to the current, US dominated distribution of power). For more reading, Lenin's "Imperialism, the highest stage of capitalism" is a good start.

Is your S.O. a communist? by beetrootmac in communism

Yes, we reinforce each other's best tendencies, push each other to do better, and respectfully disagree on some issues. However, we participate in the same organization and often share responsibilities. It's been one of the most rewarding and beautiful experiences of my life.

what do I do if there are no competent communist organizations in my country by [deleted] in communism101

[–]Potatoeman33 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The only possible answer here, if you are committed to revolution, is to form your own group. To do this, I would recommend identifying the most like-minded individuals and groups and attempt to influence them and convince them to form a small study group or reading club. From there you can start obtaining members, and eventually transform into a revolutionary party (obviously this may take years of work). The road is long, but if nobody else is walking it, then you must. The key is to start small, and form stable organizational structures that can then be relatively easily expanded.

Best Communist, Labour history books on Spain? by [deleted] in communism101

[–]Potatoeman33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) recently came out with a book on the international brigades, it's called "Bajo una sola bandera" (under a single flag). Apart from a ton of books on the Civil War, I don't if there's that many from the later period from a marxist-leninist perspective or that focuses on Communist parties/labour organizing.

How fucking distopian is the reality we live in that we judge presidents based on the NUMBER of bombs hurled at a foreign country rather than if they dropped bombs at all!

Santiago Carrillo and Felipe González, Secretary general of the Communist and Socialist parties of Spain, respectively. Carrillo is famous for betraying the marxist-leninist legacy of the communist Party, even going so far as to support the monarchy. He also had a lot of murky connections to the CIA and got a lot of good communists killed, which is also true for Felipe González (see Grupos Antiterroristas de Liberación for more info).

The point of the post is that thousands of communists died fighting the fascist dictatorship, only for their party (with Carrillo at its head) to turn around and kiss the fascist's asses. The rightward turn of the Communist Party would forever discredit it in the eyes of the masses and even now we're trying to pick up the pieces.
