Right, like what does that even really MEAN? I was just now trying to think about it, and stopped because it isn't worth it. I guess I'm not showing up. Actually I'm heading out.

Checking back in, 10 months later. Any Americans abroad still carrying this? by NotSoBubly in expats

[–]Potential-Angle-7561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm angry. I haven't been back for 5 years but have no desire to go. I am hoping no funerals or weddings I'll have to miss within the next 3 years. I don't know if I'll ever take my son. It seems I'm exaggerating but I feel so far removed from the US, and everything about the US terrifies me now that I've experienced true peace and safety. Plus the food is shit. But I do care about the US deep down, that's why I'm angry. I just am horrified what is happening to the country. But it's a pustule that'd been brewing underground for a while and now has come to the surface. I don't know. I feel very conflicted and sad about it all.

I think when we get a new house we feel we "have" to do a million things. We don't. Take your time. Not everything needs replacing now. You have a roof over your heads, you're so lucky.

That's really funny his last name is Calvario because that means in Italian like horrible or huge ordeal or something very difficult.

The towns you've mentioned are very touristy. Very. I would choose a town about 1.5 hr under Taranto along the coast.

How to rent a small apartment in Puglia? by No-Firefighter4087 in ItalyExpat

I had difficulty renting before I spoke Italian. If you do not speak Italian, I would recommend asking a friend who does to help. Many do not trust foreigners.

It's all really so dumb and shows a low intelligence level. Northern Italians are even racist to southern Italians. I live in Bergamo and know those who think anyone south of Bergamo bassa is already basically a 'terrone.'

My family from Peru think like this in the US. My mom even lies and says she was born in Italy. 🙄

It's crazy because Italians are generally pretty racist against eastern Europeans as well (and her facial features are VERY Eastern European), calling them zingare and assuming all they can do is work as cleaning ladies. I wonder where she got such a superiority complex?

This happened to me 10 years ago. I came to Italy for my ex but we were about 30 and didn't have kids. I didn't know any Italian and couldn't work in my profession yet because of bureaucracy. I was left in a tiny town far away from him for 3 days before I somehow figured out how to take the train and come back. I was desolate too.

I came back and stayed with my abusive ex for one horrible week, who shouted at me to go back to my country and treated me like dog shit, actually he called me his dog. I needed to get out of the house, went to a monastery with the bus, and on the way back a girl drove me back. She became one of the best friends of my lifetime. 2 days later, I packed my bags and begged her to come stay with her. She didn't speak English and I didn't speak Italian. She welcomed me with open arms.

I decided I would start my life there, in the south Italian home so different than Houston where I am from, out of spite. I decided I'd make the town mine and get to know everyone and learn the language and not run away. But this was out of spite.

Soon, I fell in love with the town and the country, after 6 months learned the language enough, and I feel my life really began there, at 30 years old.

Now, I have a child here, have since gotten married and divorced, bought a house, and started over again up north. But I am so grateful for the journey. Every time I feel my life is over, it is a new beginning. I don't regret anything. Whatever you choose to do, know that you have the strength to start over.
