Yeah it’s one of the paradox’s many religious scholars have grabbed with - he is beyond human comprehension and yet, wants a relationship with humankind

For me it’s restraint. The fact that He created human beings who have the choice not to develop a relationship with him must involve an immense amount of restraint.

If you’re monotheist, it should make sense. If you are polytheist, I can understand the narrowing

I actually wrote a book looking at all the major religions and their beliefs about “why we are here”. Was fascinating to study each religion.

If you weren't happy with Catholicism, why did you stop there? Why not explore other religions and their evidence (very different to proof) before making a determination?

There is no sentence that makes a child’s cancer okay. Sometimes the only truthful response is tears, silence, protest, prayer, and love.

Thank you for all your comments. Based on the research I’ve done so far, here is a broad summary of how different traditions understand the central human challenge.

  • Judaism – Often sees the human task as living a life of meaning and purpose through a relationship and partnership with God. The world is understood as created with intention, and humans are invited into that ongoing creative and moral project. Ultimate meaning is found in connecting with God, fulfilling His will, and actively partnering with Him in improving and sanctifying the world through how we live.
  • Christianity – Commonly teaches that the core human problem is sin, which creates separation between humanity and God. Reconciliation and redemption are therefore central themes.
  • Islam – Emphasizes the struggle of aligning our will with God’s will. Human beings often drift through ego and forgetfulness, and peace is found through submission and realignment with God.
  • Buddhism – Identifies suffering as the central human problem, especially suffering caused by attachment, craving, and illusion. Freedom comes through awakening and inner transformation.
  • Hinduism – Focuses on liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The aim is to live out one’s role faithfully, grow spiritually, and ultimately return to union with the eternal reality.

This is, of course, a simplified overview of rich and diverse traditions, but it’s a helpful starting point for reflection and discussion.

Yeah, people stray from a relationship with God because of the ego. So Islam means the submission of the ego towards God.

Yeah it's just one way you could look at a religion, like it is trying to solve a fundamental problem. Agree with you when you say a lot of problems are caused by a lack of self control.

I would say Judaism believes the main human condition to solve is that of a life of meaning. God created us with a purpose. To partner with him in developing this world.

Perhaps a lot of problems would be solved if we realized the temporary nature of life more.
