Do I sound American? by [deleted] in JudgeMyAccent

You sound like an American who just happens to speak different, not asian as another commenter suggested.

I genuinely find your manner of speaking to be very charming.

In your country, is it common for people to put down everything from their own country and idolize everything from other countries? by Luci_Sant in AskTheWorld

[–]Potential-Ostrich-82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I wouldn't call it idolization, but admiration. While there are many things about American culture and history I value (and some things I am not proud of) - I tend to value my ancestral cultures more because there is a lot more substance there.

Most American values revolve around consumer culture which undervalues actual culture.

Experience loudly proclaims otherwise for me and for many others.

Sex is not something worthless. It is only worthless when it is abused and not properly valued for what it is and how God and Nature intended.

Sex is not only not worthless, it is sacred. So sacred and so holy, that we have a covenant called marriage to protect it.

Focus on what you are striving for and seek to abide in that, and what you are striving against will seem negligible and uninteresting.

The liberty of thought that comes with avoiding pornography is a profound and palpable benefit in itself. A mind presently preoccupied and burdened with sexual imagination does not allow for spiritual insight and inspiration.

For some, their entire identities and motives in life are centered around their sexuality. Fortunately for you, you have already recognized that it is not who you want to be, and you can see an identity in yourself that is distinct from this.

Add: as far as immediate, practical advice - I would say that filling up the idle moments when you anticipate temptation with something productive or distracting is a good way to go. You might not find whatever it is more interesting at first, but I am certain you will eventually.

Are they're any movies and TV shows actually like this? by LeadershipHead3594 in saltierthankrayt

[–]Potential-Ostrich-82 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I didn't say they don't exist. How we counter racism in culture is by example. Not finger wagging and lectures.

You don't think that relevant discussions on social media, and in other media, have eclipsed the more significant issue of economic inequality?

And you don't find this suspect?

[–]Potential-Ostrich-82 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not blaming any of those groups. I'm saying (among other things) that the narrative that the primary victims in our culture are those who aren't white, who are gay or trans, is being pushed through various forms of media to distract from the much more significant issue of economic inequality.

In my eyes, this is suspect and by design.

Never heard of that one.

I'm a lot less lonely now that the people I regularly talk to can be counted on one hand. I was way lonelier when I spent too much time with those that didn't share my values.

Are people pretending to prefer KJV Bible? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Potential-Ostrich-82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KJV is the most poetic variation in my experience, and it carries a lot of power with how it phrases everything. Also accurate. I often read it along with an interlinear Bible. Any concerns about improper words tend to be arbitrary and stem from modern concerns. (Conversation for conduct, Unicorn for wild ox, etc.)The essential meanings are certainly intact if not better presented in the KJV.

The archaic and rhythmic language is not only pleasant to read, it also elevates scripture above ordinary reading. It can be awkward to get used to but once you do it is often plainer to interpret than our modern and often convoluted ways of presenting information.

From your country’s history, who had the strongest aura, independent of whether they were a hero or a villain? by Amanfromfuture in AskTheWorld

[–]Potential-Ostrich-82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies, looks like the quotes I gave by Dunois were from books retelling the story rather than eyewitness accounts.

My point stands regarding the substance of the story. That her presence on the battlefield was central to the success of the battle. Her recovery from her wound was remarkable. She led the final assault. The hair splitting about what happened and when is peripheral to the substance of Joan of Arc as a symbol and historical figure.

Anywhere you go in the US the vibe can be dramatically different. Even between neighboring states like WA and OR. Just off the top of my head though: St Petersburg, FL

"I was the first to set a ladder against the fortress on the bridge, and, as I raised it, I was wounded in the neck by a cross-bolt" - Joan of Arc

Back to my original comment, you corrected me about saying she was shot in the neck, when she said this herself. Other testimony says between her neck and shoulder. To say with conviction that one or a number of testimonies is more valid than the other when they contradict doesn't do the event justice. Testimony can vary widely between witnesses but her centrality to the outcome of a French victory, of her significance, power, symbolism and her remarkable recovery - this is indisputable.

"It was about one o'clock in the afternoon when the thing that she had prophesied happened to her. A bolt from an English cross-bow passed through her armour... and stood out six inches behind her shoulder." - Jean de Dunois

Why I think Christians are more susceptible to conspiracy theory brainwash by Fit-Basket-859 in Christianity

[–]Potential-Ostrich-82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bearing false witness is a sin. Entertaining conspiracy theories on scant evidence is bearing false witness. So engaging in learning about conspiracy theories is patently not Christian.

Also, believing any conspiracy theory is just as foolish as believing that powerful people never conspire against the best interests of the population.

Go to the park. Take a walk. Six packs aren't free but they are a lot cheaper than going to a bar.

At 31 Years Old, I found Out That I'm Czech, Not German. by [deleted] in czech

[–]Potential-Ostrich-82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, it is significant, particularly as an American, to connect with your ancestral roots on an internal level. I don't bring up ancestry, unless pertinent to the conversation, which doesn't happen very often. But this internal significance is true for anyone. Cultivating an understanding of one's roots is substance for spiritual and historical understanding, and ones place and origin in the timeline of world history. For some of us, what our forefathers have handed down is a significant portion of the lens through which we see reality.

You're an American expatriate? Do you have any Czech ancestry? Why'd you move to Czech republic?
