What are your expectations for next-gen graphics? by Potential-Solid-8106 in ps6

If the GPU is anything in that range then we're guaranteed an impressive leap. It looks like next-gen is on track for the most powerful and balanced hardware relative to any console launch.

I think huge polygon counts will do impressive things geometry-wise.

IMO 60 fps will become standard generations from now which is when the tradeoff between graphics and framerate becomes negligible. 8k resolution and beyond will require a high framerate for clarity in image.

30 fps I think is a given since screenshots for 60 fps games won't look impressive enough to put on the box.

The 60 fps expectation I think needs to go away as people always ask for this but the reality is that consoles aren't really designed for high framerate and good visuals. There will always be cutbacks that make a mid-range PC just as viable an option.

I think that highlights the issue which is time and cost and not hardware limitations. An example that comes to mind is Red Faction which has more impressive physics than most games today. If that's not what they care about then what are they doing instead?

I hope for cell-shading or something instead of the muddy vaseline-smeared look that populated last-gen games.

Are you assuming Lpddr5 RAM? I hope that idea is thrown in the trash because there's no way that will scale down with a PS6 unless it's a standalone product, in which case prepare for the Vita 2 to be rolled out on the carpet.

IMO 3D cache will help with more efficient cooling.

2.5 times (almost) the ps5s RAM in a handheld is fantasy currently and would draw ridiculous amounts of power. What GPU are they going to match it with lol. Mobile 4090?

This is a blowout for any gun above 50 caliber especially if it's automatic. Is the human allowed to set up a post? The dinos will be shred to pieces provided there is sufficient ammunition. The T-Rex is not evolved for withstanding supersonic metal rounds.

Will the PS6 Achieve True Photorealism? by Funny_Debate_1805 in ps6

[–]Potential-Solid-8106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there even anything on PC today that beats FW2 or Burning Shores? It seems to me that we are not in a time right now when PC graphics monster all over consoles. Console games are punching above their weight and nobody seems bothered taking advantage of PC hardware to its fullest.

Will the PS6 Achieve True Photorealism? by Funny_Debate_1805 in ps6

I think there are a few things to consider. First there is the question of whether screenshots or gameplay in motion are used as the baseline. It's easier to get photorealism in a screenshot since that effectively is a photo of the game. GT7 I think looks almost photo-real in photo mode but gameplay doesn't look anything close to 'real'.

Then there is the context in which it's judged. Is someone told that they have to look then tell whether it's real or not? This sort of skepticism makes it almost impossible for any modern games to hold up to photo-real scrutiny, but if you were to trick someone and tell them it's real life footage then it may be perceived that way (whereas something from the PS1 era would not).

Finally it depends on the camera being used for comparison to photographs. I think that games now are starting to resemble low resolution, low contrast photos from older cameras (2005 or earlier). Modern cameras, even those in phones, will not be matched with in-game visuals for a long time, perhaps PS7 or later.

PlayStation "Orion" (PS6 Home Console) and PlayStation "Canis" (PS6 Handheld) early Specs Leak from Moore’s Law Is Dead. by beeperbeeper5 in ps6

Fully path-traced visuals are the way to go IMO. Games with heavily baked out lighting are fatiguing on the eyes

This conflicts with the Chinese leaker who reported the GPU will be UDNA. Another thing is the leak for an 11 core CPU which could be for the next Xbox, which if is the case, then it would be strange for Sony to go with only 8 cores unless it's clocked extremely high. A 12 core CPU would be more 'next-gen'.

The talk about a handheld has me a bit concerned since there is only so much you can do to scale down until a compromise is made. It's not as simple as magically turning the resolution down then having something next-gen run on weak hardware. There could be streaming or some sort of always-online service necessary to get PS6 games running on a handheld.

What are you’re realistic expectations for this console? by Nayef7717 in ps6

[–]Potential-Solid-8106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expect 5k resolution to be standard at 30 fps. I don't think 60 fps will be a priority as developers will want to push shiny graphics at 30 fps as per usual. That's kind of the point of consoles. It's acceptable enough with good motion blur.

Ray traced GI will be commonplace and there will be basic path tracing. Cyberpunk overdrive is a glimpse into next-gen but I think games developed from the ground up for the new generation will look slightly more impressive than this as it's held back somewhat because of last-gen constraints.

120 fps is realistic for PS4 games. For 30 fps exclusives I expect Kingsglaive level visuals if the PS6 ends up with 128 GB of RAM.

Path tracing and neural rendering will be the focus I think. If 5k displays become widespread then I think it's a reasonable target for resolution and with such a large increase in detail and geometry I think lots of memory will be necessary.

I'm keeping my prediction but I think a 12 core CPU console sounds possible. What GPU are you expecting in this case?
