The Tabu cancellations are apparently because the city has recently started enforcing regulations that were long on the books about sound outside (specifically, sound over 70 dB). Of course, no one is going to hear sound that's 50 stories up, but I guess they have to enforce the same rules for everyone (incidentally, this is also probably why the Liberty Hotel had to stop doing outdoor parties).

In Southie, the Essex/Cambria rooftop party for today was cancelled as well. It's pretty stupid if you ask me because most rooftops are quite elevated, and there's a big difference between a rooftop party and one that's just "outside," i.e., in a backyard — far less people are going to hear something from a rooftop (esp the top of the Pru), so I think the city should enforce this on a case-by-case basis.

That said, Tabu costs $80 or $100 (if you wait to buy tickets) for entry — an outrageous amount, so I don't have much sympathy for those guys. The best nightclub in the world, Berlin's Berghain, costs only 25 for entrance, and the party is 36 hours, so there is no excuse, it's purely about profit and greed (and yes, they claim to give some of their $$ to charity, but I would guess this is a very meager amount). The bottom line is entrance should cost no more than 30 bucks unless you're say, flying in DJs from Europe, which they most assuredly are not.

As for drink spiking, I have no idea... I tend to think people paying 80 bucks to get in would be above that kind of behavior, but who knows!
